Users find PCs silenced while Microsoft looks into search fix
Microsoft seems unable to catch a break with its Windows 10 updates. No sooner than it acknowledged that its CPU usage fix borked desktop search for some, users complained that the patch has also caused audio issues.
Released on 10 September for Windows 10 1903 (aka the May 2019 Update), KB4515384 is a security update that included a fix for Cortana's CPU-munching habit. Alas, it turned out that the fix left desktop search a tad broken for some users.
While the support page for the update resolutely states (at time of writing) that "Microsoft is not currently aware of any issues with this update", the company's handy health page for Windows 10 did receive a quiet update on 11 September to indicate that it had acknowledged the issue and was looking into the problem.

It appears that we can add audio to the borkage. A glance at Reddit shows a groundswell of grumbling as some long-suffering Windows 10 users have found their audio inoperative following the update.
While a few have had some success with a reinstall of drivers or other workarounds, a worrying number have resorted to simply uninstalling the patch in order to restore sound.
The problem is that unlike the KB4512941 snafu which was an optional update KB4515384 contains important security fixes, including protection against a subclass of speculative side-channel vulnerabilities.
Microsoft is to be applauded for getting these security updates out. However, if the quality of the patches is getting to be so whiffy that users start blocking them for fear of what might end up broken, then all that effort will be for naught. ®

Seems like only troubles follow troubles on this one.

Windows is still available? I havent seen it, used it, or heard of it for years.
Im guessing it is some kind of avant garde thing for nerds and tinkerers these days.
I'm ready to switch to a Mac. I wonder if MS would even care....
Yep, still very much around... Around 85% of the personal and business computer market.
Surprising you haven't heard of it. It's all the rage. Much of the rage being literal. :-)
I guarantee that MS doesn't care. They make their money on large business customers and the Office / Office365 application suite.
They apparently don't give a crap about individual home/consumer users any more. I imagine you've noticed.
Some pop-up ad today promised “Fix Your Computer Yourself in Five Minutes” so I had to check it out. For $30 they send you a USB stick with a bootable Linux distro on it ;-)
I just need to block a few more updates to my Windows7 machine, then they should leave me alone to compute in peace.
Meanwhile, Microsoft really does need to do some slash and burn with the execs responsible for the Win10 update fiascos. Perhaps requiring all employees to put their mice down and watch as they livestream the firings and escort the execs out as an example for their remaining employees.
LOL :-)

I will send you one free! It also records and transmits all your downloads, keystrokes and disk files to me so I can make recommendations to use for optimizing your setup.
[I wish MS would stop trying to “fix” W10]
Well, how else can they convince you to upgrade to Windows 11? /mostly not joking
I have a Windows 8.1 machine. A couple of them. And I’m leaving one at Windows 7.
Office / 365 is lousy too.
Goes double for Skype For Business.
Still on version 1809, purposely.
Will consider upgrading to 1903 and they get their mess straightened out.
I just ran the full update this morning, and I have ZERO issues stemming from it. Search works just fine, smooth running, sound works OK (Listening to Alice Cooper at Wacken 2013 right this second).

It did take its sweet time loading, mind you. nearly 3 hours.
MICROSLOP living up to its name!~
Have several machines with 8.1 home and pro. Will keep them for years even if MS doesn’t support them ... most app vendors will.
:)
Oh crap I hadn’t thought of that. Yeah, betcha that outfit has a PO Box in Moscow in their contact info!
I miss the days of Windows 98 and the subsequent slight update to that.
I miss the days of Windows 7.
I miss the days before Bill Gates claimed that Internet Explorer was part of the operating system and began all those changes. But Windows 7 was the last decent version for me.
I’m not crazy about 8 but I turned off all updates there, too. Other than taking the 8.1 patch.
Count your blessings. When mine installed KB4515384 both Search and Edge bit the dust.
