Breaking, literally: Microsoft's fix for CPU-hogging Windows bug wrecks desktop search
The Register ^ | Sep 11, 2019 | Thomas Claburn

Posted on 09/11/2019 7:39:56 PM PDT by dayglored

One step forward, er, one step back. Nobody gets too far like that

Microsoft's build 18362.356 (KB4515384) for its Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) rolled out on Tuesday with security improvements for Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, networking tech and input devices – and a CPU usage fix that, for some, has broken desktop search.

The security tweaks address a variety of speculative execution side-channel vulnerabilities known as microarchitecture data sampling (MDS) for 32-bit x86 versions of Windows. Intel dealt with the CVEs at issue – CVE-2019-11091, CVE-2018-12126, CVE-2018-12127, CVE-2018-12130 – in May.

The update, released concurrently with Build 17763.737 for the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (v1809), also includes security enhancements for assorted Windows components.

Microsoft says its update fixes a high CPU usage problem associated with SearchUI.exe reported by a small number of users who disabled searching the web via Windows Desktop Search.

But its fix has nixed SearchUI.exe for some. Those griping claim SearchUI.exe, a part of Cortana, won't launch after installing KB4515384.

"What a mess – I had the original issue with SearchUI.exe and it sending my CPU to unparalleled heights and showing a big black pane of nothing," wrote Reddit user cyrenaic101 in a complaint thread. "So I uninstalled that turd. And then here comes the 'fix' KB4515384. Search completely broken…"

Similar complaints surfaced in another Reddit discussion of the updates.

Among those who claim to have undone the snafu, solutions involve either reverting to an older build and blocking updates, enabling Bing search via the Windows Registry or replacing the Cortana Cache folder with a version from a previous working build.

In November last year, Microsoft published a blog post from Michael Fortin, corporate vice president of Windows, addressing concerns about the quality of Windows updates after a series of problems that culminated in the re-release of its Windows 10 October 2018 update.

Despite the problematic release, Fortin maintained that the quality of Windows releases has been improving. "Over the last three years one of our key indicators of product quality – customer service call and chat volumes – has steadily dropped even as the number of machines running Windows 10 increased," he said.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. ®

Here’s a video showing how to set boot order IF your bios doesn’t have the option enabled to boot from CD- (But soundsl iek you were already able to set it up in bios- so this likely won’t apply to your situation) You have to change a couple of settings in bios to even show the order list if ‘boot from CD’ isn’t available when you rapidly press F-10- (

(Note- on my computer- to get to the BOOT MENU- I have to rapidly hit the “Escape” button while the computer is booting- not the F-10 button- my F-10 takes me to bios- which i don’t want when trying to boot to CD- So- when I want to boot from CD- I reboot, and keep hitting hte “Escape” button till the boot menu comes up- then i can choose the CD IF it’s in the list- IF it’s not in list- then i must enable boot priority in bios- like the fella in the video shows)

With the CD in the CD drive- reboot- hit escape button rapidly right when computer starts booting- see if htis brings up boot menu options

Note- He’s pressing F-10 rapidly to get to bios- but some computers are F-9- usually though it’s F-10

Note- if you don’t get the boot menu when hitting esc button- then 1 of 2 things is happening- 1: either your computer has a different boot menu key, and We;kk have to find out what key your computer uses for boot menu (Note- write these boot key numbers down, bios key, safe mode key, recovery key, configure key etc- and tape it to the computer or keep in safe place so you can refer to them later-

My keys on an HP Desktop are as follows (and i have to hit them rapidly while booting)

F-11 Recovery
F-10 Bios
F-8 Safe Mode
Control+1 Configure computer
Esc- Boot Menu

Your might be the same, or have different keys assigned to them- but usually, many computers have similar or same keys for these- I taped the list to my monitor because i forget a lot lol

2: OR you missed the boot menu option during boot by not hitting the key at the right moment (this sometimes happens, even though we hit the key repeatedly while it’s booting- don’t get discouraged- just try it a few more times while booting- it’s kinda hard to get the timing right sometimes- which is why they tell you to ‘rapidly keep hitting key while booting

Thanks. I’ve already re-set the boot order to boot from the disk (if one’s inserted).

Still no joy.

did you let it boot for a couple of minutes once hte screen goes black? It does take awhile for the linux boot screen to come up as it’s running from the DVD

Yes, I've let it sit for as long as fifteen minutes before bailing. Right now it's been sitting in boot up mode for close to twenty minutes with no signs of life.

I know that the Linux OS is on the disk. I definitely verified that. I also tested the CD player with an audio disk, and it's working fine.

I even burned the ISO to a USB stick to see if the computer would boot from that. No joy there, either.

> Classic Shell hides all that shite - I never see it.

Classic Shell has made life actually pretty pleasant on Win10 for me. Getting on a stock 10 system with CS is like slogging through a swamp.

> So my decision to ride System 7 into the sunset was a good one?

Long as you remember that after sundown, you better either find a Win10 system, or get that 7 puppy off the internet. After Jan 2020, Win7 becomes a serious liability for web usage.

That's reasonable. I post the "OMG-IT'S-BOKE" news items when I see them because it MIGHT help a fellow FReeper figure out what's wrong with their system, and it gives a heads-up to folks to look out for symptoms.

Experience does indicate that some percentage of users will have problems regardless, so we have to filter that noise out.

So right. I’m even seeing this used against Apple products.

Latest: “The holes, the holes! Three of ‘em!”

Sometimes, the Tech Press is even more idiotic than the drivebys, which is saying a lot!

> Windows 10 is a complete sh*t show.

Not yet "complete", they have a way to go yet. :-)

IMO it will become "complete" at the point when they push out an unavoidable "update" to WinXP and Win7 that disables those older versions. Think they wouldn't do it?

You should expect that starting Jan 2020, Win7 installs will start popping up non-blockable notifications saying "THIS VERSION OF WINDOWS IS OUT OF SUPPORT. IT IS INSECURE AND UNSAFE. UPGRADE NOW TO WINDOWS 10."

Think they wouldn't do it?

Yep, still have some Win7-Pro VMs. No trouble so far.

Yeah, I saw that. I'm waiting for TweakUI. That was probably my favorite Windows Tool/Toy of all time.

After Jan 2020, Win7 becomes a serious liability for web usage.

you can run windows 7 in a virtual box or in a sandbox which will make it practically invulnerable to infecting your machine if one wishes to keep using win 7

Or better yet- run linux in a virtual box - don’t allow access to main os while the virtual box is online-

> I have “updates” TURNED OFF but something just freaking updated. OMG I detest this thing. I wish my good, sane Win7 Ultra laptop had not gone toes up HATE 10.

If somebody made a car that acted as unpredictably and uncooperatively as Windows 10, nobody would buy it. If they made a car that broke as often as Windows 10, they'd be sued out of business in a year.

Honestly, the only reason I get alone with Win10 is that I only use it for running Office and similar programs that can't run on Linux or a Mac. If I were trying to use it as my main daily workstation operating system, I'd have to invent new deities every day, just so I could take their names in vain.

> It’s starting to get real hard to not think they do this on purpose Dayglored. A whole lot of new computers installed with windows will be sold because of this. Non techy folks just toss them and get a new one rather than fix it.

We all feel sorry for somebody who, by mistake, steps on their own d!ck, or gets their t!t caught in a wringer (depending on sex). But when somebody repeatedly does stupid things, looks like an idiot over and over, and pisses off hundreds of millions of customers, you have to wonder whether they have another agenda.

Yes, and yet -some- software companies manage to do it right most of the time, and have a reputation for accuracy, stability, and security.

wow- I’m out of ideas then-

Definitely something wrong- I think what i woudl try is burning a disk of something like clonezilla (which is a linux cloning system which runs from the boot process- just to see if you can boot from other boot CD’s- or a windows system repair disk or something- just to test if any boot CD will work- if so- then you will know something is wrong with the linux disk- You can make a windows system repair disk

I don’t know what version of windows yo are running, but if it’s 7 here’s instructions on how to create a repair disk:

To create a system repair disc

Open Backup and Restore by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Backup and Restore.

In the left pane, click Create a system repair disc, and then follow the steps. Administrator permission required

If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Same idea, but I implement it in reverse.

I run Linux as my baseline operating system (at work), and MacOS as baseline (at home), and have a VMware Win10-Pro-64 Virtual Machine in each one for Windows tasks. I can back up a Windows VM simply by copying a VM folder, and restore if it gets corrupted with a simple copy. That has proven useful numerous times both at home and at work.

Getting Linux to run on a modern HP laptop that was designed for Win10 required using the latest and greatest Ubuntu Linux 18.04.3 but it's working, and VMware Workstation runs fine on it to support the Win10 VM.

What I don’t get is with all the programming staff and infrastructure they have available, they obliviously still do not test this stuff very well first, if at all. They just throw it out there blind and put their customers at risk with it. And like you say, over and over.

They are like law makers in congress, Just got to make laws and send them out. Whether they are needed or not, whether they work or not, none of that matters. Just keep passing something/anything and send it out, who cares what the consequences will be.

For a long time now I have been suspicious of MS inventing and sending out a whole lot of updates just for the sake of “sending something/anything” needed or not. The biggest enemy of MS operating systems is MS themselves. They have done more sabotage to their own OS than all the outside hacking ever did to it.

The odds are almost impossible to blame on chance and accident.

[[Getting Linux to run on a modern HP laptop that was designed for Win10 required using the latest and greatest Ubuntu Linux 18.04.3]]

Did you format the drive first? or dual install it alongside windows?

Windflier wanted to just try out linux live CD and had a heck of a time getting the new hp to even see the boot CD- Don’t know why companies make it so difficult to do basic stuff like boot to a CD- or like in your case, even run linux- I have an HP desktop- but i bought a new SSD and started everything from scratch- luckily i had downloaded windows 7 before they stopped allowing that- and was able to use my previous Windows 7 license to reinstall it- had to get a couple of drivers off the net- but that was it- linux installed fine- so i don’t have any of that HP junk on the computer-

I guess they make it difficult ot discourage novices from using power tool software like boot CD’s Repair CD’s etc which could mess up the computer- but it’s just frustrating
