Massachusetts Race Postponed Due to Rare Mosquito-Borne Virus. Should You Worry?
Runner's World ^ | September 06, 2019 | Jordan Smith

While mosquitoes are often associated with West Nile virus, there is another mosquito-borne virus that is currently making headlines: the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, a rare disease that can cause inflammation in the brain (called encephalitis). It mainly affects people in parts of the Great Lakes region, along the Eastern seaboard, and the Gulf Coast.

Now, a fifth case in humans has just been confirmed in Massachusetts, and EEE activity has been detected in 10 counties there, according to the Massachusetts Department of Health.

As a result, many outdoor activities in areas of concern have been canceled or postponed, including a 5K in Medway, Massachusetts, which was scheduled for August 31.

“On Thursday, August 29th, the Department of Public Health placed Medway in a critical risk level, and soon after, the town of Medway instituted an outside activity curfew of 6 p.m.,” a spokesperson for the Medway Police Association told Runner’s World. “Due to the severity of the issue, the race organizers determined that holding the race would pose too great a risk to our runners, volunteers, sponsors, vendors and event staff.”

The event will be rescheduled for mid-to-late October, and will be announced as soon as it is finalized. Information can be found on the race website.

In the meantime, should you worry about EEE when you are about to go on a run? Here’s what you need to know. What should you know about Eastern equine encephalitis?

Like the West Nile virus, EEE is an arbovirus—arthropod-borne virus—meaning it is spread by mosquitoes. Black-legged mosquitoes circulate the EEE virus in the environment, and it’s transmitted to humans through other “bridging” mosquito species.

lovely- can’t go out in yards anymore with grass for fear of 5 or so diseases you can get from ticks- life altering, life damaging diseases- can’t be around swampy areas or anyplace with standing water because of mosquitoes- can’t camp in lean to’s anymore- because of hanta vitus (sp?) from mice that can kill you- and you also gotta worry now about mice in homes because of this deadly disease-

Criminy- when we were kids, we practically grew up in the woods- worked outside in various outdoor jobs- had mice all through the house- didn’t worry about mosquitoes- etc etc etc- now you take your life in your hands just being outdoors- (not that it will stop me- but it sure does give one pause)- Can’t imagine what folks who must work outdoors do nowadays- like loggers, carpenters, lawn maintenance folks etc- Some of the ticks that carry the diseases are so small you can’t even see them- seriously- can’t even feel them crawling- The bug spray companies must be making a fortune these days- back in the day noone used it- but now it’s almost to the point of a matter of life and death-

We are pretty much the only country not able to use DDT.

DDT is manufactured and exported by China, India & N Korea.

wonder if DDT would work on ticks too- probably- millions of folks in this country are getting this life crippling lyme disease- not to mention several other equally dangerous diseases from ticks- and it’s spreading very quickly around the country-

“maybe we are catching up to Australia lol”

No, an incredibly long ways to go, fortunately.

I know, i was kidding- and yes- we’re pretty fortunate but- things are getting pretty bad with ticks spreading across country- I suspect many people go diagnosed- especially in states where it hasn’t been ‘officially recognized’ yet- many hometown docs just don’t know what the sick people’s symptoms add up to yet-

We had a neighbor who’s daughter got bit- developed the bullseye rash, and hometown doc said ‘nope- not lyme disease’ because the test came back ‘negative for lyme’ (Which is another reason not many people get diagnosed- the tests are notoriously bad at detecting it)

Anyway- she took her daughter to the city for testing because she got so weak- and yep- turned out to be lyme disease-

***the Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus***

Anyone remember when VEE (Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis) swept up from South America, through Mexico and into the US back around 1993-94? It hit the horse herds bad, and infected some people.

Wonder if this is the same thing.

Yes, I also have had some contact with the false negative culture of Lyme Disease testing. At that time the common hospital lab test produced an unacceptable number of false negatives (may still be the case); however, one or two specialized research labs offered a superior test but without insurance coverage. Few patients proceeded to that test at their own expense. I’ve forgotten a lot of the details, but the etiology of many not properly diagnosed symptom clusters might well lie with the tick bite.

I've enjoyed numerous outdoor activities in numerous geographical locations on this continent and have never been bitten by anything more than a mosquito.

An emu stole an apple off me once, does that count?

It is not the same, but it is a closely related virus. Either one can kill you.

Looks more like that obnoxious Emu from the Liberty Mutual ads, sans shades.
