In 2019, more and more cities across America are encouraging their residents to commute by bicycle. Cycling, of course, is good for the environment in terms of reducing pollution from car-dominant streets, and its a healthier way to travel.
But cities gaining new cyclists are quickly, tragically finding that they do not have the proper infrastructure to keep them safe. Cyclist fatalities have gone up 25 percent across the U.S. since 2010, and up 10 percent in 2018 itself, while all other traffic fatalities have decreased.
And it matters where you live: 75 percent of these cyclist deaths occur in urban areas. New York City became the most dangerous city for cyclists in 2019 with 19 deaths to datealmost double the total in 2018.

No, you are wrong.
All cyclists ARE smug, stupid leftist Luddites in spandex.
All.
No exceptions.
You use taxpayer funded roadway, you pay.
I know the type you are talking about and even in conservative TN where I live I see them. They are rude and obnoxious. My point was though that not all riders are that way. We enjoy the exercise and outdoors. I typically ride alone on off-road trails but if I am on one of my back country roads I always am respectful of vehicles. Oh, and I mount a GoPro and a .38 revolver on my bike when I ride. :-)
1) Mandate the licensing of cyclists, but only after taking 16 hours of training and obtaining full liability insurance.
Are there any statistics on cyclist deaths in cities with Republican versus Democrat mayors?

BULL MANURE! What an unthinking, preposterous, LOWLIFE perspective. You express such a thought after striking a bicyclist, guess what? You will be facing manslaughter charges and should spend years in prison. DESERVEDLY!
People have a right to bicycle on the roads and use the bike for transportation. Just because YOUR LARD AZZ is hindering YOUR thought process on the issue, it does not change that. I find that people with your perspective on this, are out of condition inconsiderate slobs.
and continuing to the NON-LOWLIVES in this thread:
Bikes were FIRST on the road well before cars. The infrastructure going forward needs to be better accommodating for cyclists. [Note the F-ing period]
Miraculously he survived without lasting injuries.
You mean like this?
In this suburb’s “major” city, Pittsburgh, PA, they have decreased parking, and made car lanes less wide. All for bicyclists. I see them when I am in the city, but there are not enough to justify their new perks. the cyclists that I see are a hazard. Saw one a few weeks ago with no lights, and wearing black, at night. Could hardly see him. They hog the road, they are a nuisance.
Ahhh...wanting something for nothing then complaining when it doesn’t work out. We motorcyclist say “Nobody rides for free!”.
Yes.
Here in Duluth your cyclists are hippy oddballs, fitness types and about 60% people with suspended licenses due to DUI.
The hippy types and the DUI guys all tend to wind up on the wrong side of the road.
Despite billions of dollars being spent to create beautiful bike trails, they avoid those and ride on roadways. I believe that the very laws designed to keep them safe are killing them. They feel empowered around cars because in many cases, they have been grated a certain right and the motorist must give them three feet. Reality doesn’t always allow for this and frequently foolish riders are not seen. Still, armed with this entitlement they blast around cars, get in cars way and just behave stupidly because after all, “they are in the right.” I once told one such fool that such an epitaph will look good on his tombstone.
😎👍
Do it for the children!
“....and I dont wear spandex.”
Here in northern Virginia you would be an outcast.
Good idea.
Now let's talk about the licensing and rider training programs that would be inevitably mandated at our expense.
And what about kids? At what age does licensing and insurance become mandatory? Oh - 'You use taxpayer funded roadway, you pay...'
No, thanks.
Just as we have plenty of legislation that sensibly addresses the purchase, ownership and use of firearms, but they are largely ignored and unenforced, we have 'rules of the road' that cyclists are supposed to adhere to. They're basically the same as the ones that govern drivers of motor vehicles.
Let's start paying attention to existing laws before begging politicians to come up with new ones that cost us all.
Cyclists should be licensed and insured.

To be really safe, we need walking to be licensed.
Precisely the dream.
Every Democrat is a violent totalitarian thug.
Wait. You mean that white line that’s painted on the side of the road delineating the “bike path” doesn’t protect the bike rider?
