As a boy attending Washington Redskins games with his family at RFK Stadium, a short distance from his home in Maryland’s Montgomery County, Dan Snyder would gaze across the field and peer into the owner’s box. Other kids daydreamed about playing on an NFL field. Snyder envisioned himself lording over one.
“I’d just watch,” Snyder once said, “and imagine what was happening in there.”
Since 1999, when he was 34 years old, Daniel M. Snyder has watched the Washington Redskins from the seat of power he once fantasized about. The desired trappings of NFL ownership have remained elusive, barely any closer to him than when he sat in the stands.
The upcoming NFL season marks the start of Snyder’s third decade as Washington’s owner, an occasion to take stock of his impact on the franchise and examine the state of his stewardship. The Redskins have morphed under Snyder from one of the NFL’s crown jewels to a success-starved organization in persistent unrest, a franchise lacking in on-field accomplishment and seeking its first playoff win since January 2006, rife with off-field issues and facing the monumental task of building a new stadium — Snyder’s best opportunity to reenergize Washington’s fan base and revitalize his franchise.

Maybe … if Virginia pols don’t throw a fit about changing the name. But Ashburn, imho, would be a mistake. It’s basically West Timbuctoo. It’s ok for Loudon, Fairfax and Montgomery fans, but it’s terrifically inconvenient for three quarters of the metro area. A central location has a lot to recommend it, if one can be found.
Well i was thinking people are used to a face on the helmets. Maybe hammer and sickle on one side, Castro on the other?
There’s one very important thing he hasn’t tried: hire a good GM and don’t interfere with the team.

Yep that puzzles me about some soorts team owners. Almost all are very wealthy from running other businesses. Yet when somebody like Jerry Jones or Snyder buy a team, they think just because they are passionate fans that they are smarter than career football men.
I’ve always thought the best approach, is that these owners should check their ego, hire the best GM and other career football men they can find, then get out of the way and allow them to do their jobs. I’m sure that’s how they did things in their other businesses.
I think there are a few Federal Departments whose headquarters buildings could be bulldozed for a productive economic alternative. :)
Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys for $140 million. The franchise is now worth $5 Billion.
Jerry must be doing something right.
I have occasionally wondered how Cooke’s son would have fared as owner. I never really understood his decision to squeeze him by putting the team up for auction. Maybe he believed his son was going to win the auction.
Especially in the cap era. I think that’s the thing that really damages Snyder and Jones. They live in a world where they can just throw money at problems and make them go away. Any problem, any amount of money. In a hard cap sport it’s just not like that. So they tend to throw too much money in one area and the team suffers. The Cousins thing was a classic example. I can see not being sure Cousins was good enough for a long term contract, I can even see tagging him one year on a “prove it or lose it”. But the second tag, with the penalty that ensues from consecutive tagging?! That was just bone headed. You can’t throw that much at a player because you’re not sure, the talent you don’t get to sign damages the team long term.
I was hoping the Cowboys weren’t going to redo Zeke’s contract. I was hoping he’d sit out the year while his replacement gets 1,000 yards.
We are talking about two different things. Sports teams values have skyrocketed in recent years. Jerry has done some things right, you are correct. I was thinking about the turmoil which has surrounded some teams with prominent owners, such as Jerry, who has been his own GM.

They’ve got the offensive line. Zeke came in cause they let the other high priced guy walk (Murray? I can’t even remember anymore, he went to Philly and nobody cared about him again... well maybe his mom). The smart move was to let him sit. RBs are fungible.

The best place for the new stadium was Potomac Yards on the Virginia side just before crossing the 14th street bridge into DC. I think it was the most perfect spot, but, as we know, everyone had a hissy fit including the nearby residents, so it wasn't built there.
So instead of the stadium, there is now a ton of retail with all the big box stores with full parking lots. Every time I drive past it or stop there, I smile, because these nearby residents did not want a stadium that dragged in 50,000 spectators 8 times a year with an occasional concert and an occasional college football game. They did not want the traffic. So now, they have thousands and thousands of cars daily driving through the neighborhood instead. I think they took the wrong deal.
I read an article in the Post about 10 years ago and they interviewed a number of residents about the post stadium fight and what ended up eventually in the space instead. Everyone single one of them stated they thought they made the wrong decision.
