Why Am I Just Today Discovering Lisa Stansfield?

Posted on 08/30/2019 8:17:28 PM PDT by Cedar

Lisa Stansfield, one of the best female pop singers ever. Today is the first time I've heard her voice. Amazing voice, God-given talent. I love great vocals, glad I discovered her tonight.

Yes, I have a Trace Adkins version, but it was recorded live at Grand Ole Opry. My list includes:
  1. Poor Wayfaring Stranger, Edward Gerhard, House of Guitars, 2001. This guy is amazing is an amazing picker - he used old second-hand store guitars on this album.
  2. Poor Wayfaring Stranger, Joan Baez, David's Album, 1969. Still the most amazing voice.
  3. Poor Wayfaring Stranger, Peter Hollens featuring the Swingle Singers, 2011. This is an amazing a capella version.
  4. Poor Wayfaring Stranger, Wayne Pascall, A Capella Gospel Classics 2, 2007. This guy is an amazing bass. The song is performed in an slave spiritual manner with rail-driving sound effects. Not my favorite.
  5. Poor, Wayfaring Stranger, Kristin Chenoweth, 2005.
  6. A Wayfaring Stranger, Bob Gibson, Joy Joy! The Young & Wonderful Bob Gibson. Cut for the Riverside label during the late '50s. Gibson's recordings helped touch off the whole folk revival in the 60s.
  7. Wayfaring Stranger, Doc & Merle Watson, Remembering Merle, 1992.
  8. Wayfaring Stranger, Emmylou Harris, Emmylou Harris Anthology, 2001.
  9. Wayfaring Stranger, Eva Cassidy, Songbird, 1997. Eva died in 1996 from melanoma, another brilliant musician taken way too early. Her music was little-known during her 33 years of life, but today her soul-stirring voice is reaching people all over the world.
  10. Wayfaring Stranger, Johnny Cash, American III - Solitary Man, 2000.
  11. Wayfaring Stranger, Suzy Boguss, American Folk Songbook, 2011. This is a fantastic album!
  12. Wayfaring Stranger, Trace Adkins, How Great Thou Art: Gospel Favorites Live from the Grand Ole Opry.

Thanks. Until digital music came along, I would have found two, maybe three of those. I really like putting together playlists of favorite songs by a wide variety of artis.

I did this also with “Ghost Riders in the Sky.”

If you study her more you’ll find a silly rumor that she was not an South American Indian Princess from the Andes Mountains, but a New Jersey housewife named Amy Camus (Yma Sumac spelled backwards). Quite an astonishing larger than life individual.

Oh, and one more thing, if you have ever watched "The Big Lebowski" you may remember at the Jackie Treehorn villa in Malibu scene, that is Yma Sumac singing while the topless girl is bounced on the beach trampoline just before Ben Gazzara suddenly appears and says, "Hello Dude. Thanks for coming, I'm Jackie Treehorn."

Yes, that is how I discovered her.
