Why Does TSA Make Most U.S. Flyers Remove Their Shoes?

It’s a safe bet to say that hundreds of millions of U.S. flyers since Reid’s attempted attack have had to remove their shoes while passing through a TSA security checkpoint. TSA also says that since the screening of shoes was initiated it has screened close to 10 BILLION (with a ‘B’) of them. The security agency says the figure is a “conservative estimate,” too.

This is where we must ask ourselves why we’re still taking our shoes off, given there’s never been a shoe bomb-style attack that’s originated on U.S. soil. Indeed, Reid as well as the infamous Underwear Bomber (Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab) boarded flights which came from Europe, not the U.S. Their terrorist bosses had identified key security weaknesses in the system that transported international travelers to America and then took advantage of them.

The simplest answer to why the U.S. still requires most air travelers to submit their shoes for security inspection after all these years boils down to caution on the part of TSA and the government. And such caution owes its existence to several factors, starting with the fact that Reid’s attack nearly succeeded and that the terrorist world never lacks for copycats. Sooner or later, the thinking goes, some terror group will try again to insert a shoe-style bomber onto a flight, preferably one originating in the U.S., if only to prove that our aviation security practices aren’t terror-proof.

because a standard Muslim terrorist technique is the shoe bomb, and it could easily destroy an entire airplane in flight by just punching holes in the cabin

that’s why

Because it humiliates the passengers, making them agree to becoming submissive sheep, enabling the government to claim it’s making us safer.

“targeted profiling of passengers”

Everybody needs to go through security every time in my opinion.

I won’t justify that claim for security reasons.

In July when I flew out of Atlanta’s Hartsfield Airport (the world’s busiest airport) to Fort Wayne, IN I didn’t have to take off my shoes. When I flew back home from Fort Wayne I had to take off my shoes. Also, I got padded down. I’m a 73 y.o. grandma—ridiculous.

My husband and I are traveling to Israel on El Al soon. They profile everybody prior to boarding at the gate area

I fly United to/from Israel. Here in the US everything is the same as if one were flying to Florida, until one gets to the departure gate. There all bags are opened and given at least a once over. In Israel, you are asked a few questions by obviously trained folks, and if your answers don't trouble them, which mine don't, they send you on your way. I think you do have to pass through a magnetometer, but not one of those x-ray machines.

Because a Muslim stuffed c4 in his shoe and tried to Jihad an airliner. The TSA is a gift of Islam to the modern world.

Next time you are stuck in line waiting for a body search thank a Muslim.

And you’d be surprised what can be hidden in shoes, like many different types of sharp objects.

They found the boot polish I bought in Nashville, I feel safe.

It’s the time-worn “if it saves one life ...” flawed reasoning and justification typical of the petty torments of tyrannical bureaucracies with power.

Because of one shoe bomber and since they aren’t allowed to profile 80 year old nuns have to remove their shoes.

Yep pre check helps, i also pay the ~150$ or so a year for CLEAR

Saves me 30 minutes to an hour each time in a lot of airports...walk up to kiosk, look into retina scanner and get escorted straight to tsa precheck screening , no lore waiting on ID check

I see three main problems with civilian aviation security: explosives, weapons and cockpit command.

The cockpit doors could be secured by a security system that takes into account:
1. time and the plane’s scheduling
2. tire pressure[is it on the ground?]
3. GPS location[is it where it is supposed to be?], and
4. cockpit input device[do the cockpit crew think the cockpit door should be locked shut?].

Explosives could be screened for by walking through a hallway instead of standing in a revolving booth.

Weapons are the toughest problem. One thing that would be helpful is better standardization of power supplies and barring say large devices like laptops. My neighbor and my former neighbor love their iPhones and never use a laptop.

People that are loaded with electronics or metal would have to go through the existing security setup.
