I fly United to/from Israel. Here in the US everything is the same as if one were flying to Florida, until one gets to the departure gate. There all bags are opened and given at least a once over. In Israel, you are asked a few questions by obviously trained folks, and if your answers don't trouble them, which mine don't, they send you on your way. I think you do have to pass through a magnetometer, but not one of those x-ray machines.

That implies that the Israelis don’t think our existing system is effective enough.
