The other day I was in an old farmhouse in the adjoining county and someone asked me a rhetorical question:
'Why didn't we have a drug problem when you and I were growing up?'
I replied that I had a drug problem when I was young:
I was drug to church on Sunday morning.
I was drug to church for weddings and funerals.
I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter the weather.
I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults.
I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn't put forth my best effort ineverything that was asked of me.
I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered a profanity.
I was drug out to pull weeds in the garden and flower beds.
I was drug to the homes of neighbors to help mow the yard, repair the clothesline, and if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, my dad would have drug me back to the woodshed.
Those drugs are still in my veins and they affect my behavior in everything I do, say, or think.
They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin, and if today's children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place.
God bless the parents who drugged us.
I was drinking by 14 on the weekends.
Never lead to a drinking problem but it was early.
It wasn’t a good thing to do but a beer or shot of JD or bottle of cheap wine, the first one you ever have isn’t go to RUIN THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
Shooting heroin, smoking crack, crystal meth...only ONE time and you can be hooked for life on a scale 1000s of times larger than after you have your first beer or shot.
Oh and I don’t drink anymore. I don’t drink any less but I don’t drink anymore :)
To reinforce your vanity, my pop died when I was 14 or i would NOT have been drinking at 14 because I would have been too busy recovering from the beating my father gave me.
Pops are important folks.
That’s why God created them
I want to change one thing.
the first one you ever have isnt go to RUIN THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
isn’t LIKELY is what I should have written. It can and does happen.
Just not nearly on the same scale.
Growing up in the 70’s we did acid, pcp, cocaine, pot, alcohol and mushrooms. The difference today is the availability and non-nonchalant attitude towards heroin.
Mornin’ Sod....Always love your posts. Sac
The over-prescribing of legal painkillers is much more of a problem today than in the past; it is responsible for a real demographic change in drug addiction. It has spread this problem into intact middle- and upper-class families like nothing else has; instead of the black sheep in those families dabbling, law-abiding people are caught up in this and ruined.
Hi Sac;)
Noting the ‘serious’ side of FReeper responses - seniors are rapidly disappearing!
Not for nothing....but after a while, you realize that some Doctors are “pushers”.
No doubt; they’re finally starting to jail some for it. Those involved with dental procedures are similar.
Some docs are pushers...and users.
The Pharmacist said it was unusual and Penicillen ($4) was the usual.
The serious underprescribing of pain medications is also a serious problem. How many suicides are committed by despairing patients facing a lifetime of intractable pain because physicians are too afraid and intimidated to prescribe adequate pain relief?
Not surprised; I had an oral surgeon insist on writing a prescription for an opioid painkiller despite my insistence that I wouldn’t fill it. His rationale was that he couldn’t call it in because it was an opioid; I reassured him I’d never fill it anyway, but he wrote it nonetheless. Unscrupulous people can make a lot of money filling it then selling the pills - a LOT of money.
I’ve honestly never heard of doctors refusing to prescribe strong painkillers (though I’ve met some that are hesitant); it is usually not very difficult to simply find another doctor who will do it.
“Some docs are pushers...and users.”
I was reading a bit on the singer George Michael and needless to say when he went to rehab, he was noticed there. But he also noted that among his compatriots were 4 dentists. Interesting.
I had hemorrhoids removed over the course several doctor visits (yes...ewww). If the doc hadn’t given me opiods for the pain/extreme discomfort...I would’ve robbed a pharmacy. Some medical procedures absolutely require the strong stuff. Common sense and experience told me those little pills could lead to problems. I was able to maintain the proper balance.
We had a dr. in the small town that I grew up near. If you were the least bit over weight he would prescribe biphetamine 20, also known as black beauties. Go back after a week and tell him, Doc, those pills are working great, I dont get hungry anymore like I did but.............I’m having a hard time getting to sleep. BAM!! He would write a script for qualuudes.
Same thing happened to a friend. Hubby was hospitalized twice for bleeding. Third time...he didn't make it.
bump!
Also, when docs push pills as a solution to pain, it's pretty easy to start believing the propaganda.
