A woman's daily habit of cleaning her ears with cotton swabs led to a life-threatening infection in her skull, according to news reports.
The 37-year-old woman, who is identified only as Jasmine, said she cleaned her ears every night with cotton swabs... But over time, she noticed she had trouble hearing out of her left ear, and finally went to the doctor. She was initially told she had an ear infection, and was given antibiotics.
But her hearing problems remained, and she soon noticed blood appearing on the cotton swabs after she cleaned her ears.
After a hearing test showed she had moderate deafness, she was referred to an ear, nose and throat specialist. The specialist ordered a CT scan, which showed a horrifying condition: Jasmine had a bacterial infection that was "eating away" at her skull bone behind her ear...
Jasmine eventually underwent a 5-hour surgery to remove the infected tissue and reconstruct her ear canal. The surgeons told her that she had cotton fibers lodged in her ear, which had become infected.

I’ll never forget what a doctor told me 40+ years ago: don’t stick anything in your ear smaller than your elbow.
Ears are far to sensitive to clean DAILY with a swab. She gave her ears no time to heal.
Don’t put anything smaller than your elbow into your ears.
hold my beer, ...
Obama’s been doing it his whole life.
Osucka uses the mother of all Q-tips.

Speaking of Q-tips.
Heard the same advice!
ping
She used Q-tips! See, see Q was right!
Doc says to my husband...Do you clean your ears with a Q-Tip? Yes....every day.
Well, you have enough wax packed in there to start a wax museum.
3-5 drops of hydrogen peroxide in each ear is the trick.
Yeah it fizzes a bit but dissolves the wax.
My doc says most colds and viruses enter through the ears ....
H2O2 also kills da germs too.
Every time you use a Q-Tip, a bit of the cotton fibers get stuck inside. Eventually, they add up so you can’t hear and eventually get infected. That’s one product that should be taken off the market.
Do you do anything after the peroxide dtops? How often?
I believe the box of Q-Tips explicitly says “don’t use in ears”
Still, she’s just ONE example of why we have such stupid ‘warnings’ on every object possible.
I can hear the lawyer ads on TV now if you received an skull infection after using Q-tip call XXX XXX XXXX for class action case.
