People who follow the Paleo diet often do so for health reasons, eschewing many carbs, especially grains, in favor of lean meats and vegetables. Now, research indicates that this caveman style of eating may have hidden dangers to your heart health.
The Paleo diet, which draws nutritional guidelines from the diets of our human ancestors, advocates eating like a hunter and gathererconsuming lots of meat, vegetables, nuts, and some fruitswhile excluding agriculturally-based foods such as grains, legumes, and dairy, along with refined sugar and processed oils.
Though no one would argue the nutritional merits of vegetables and lean protein, pulling whole grains out of the diet may have some harmful hidden consequences with regard to the gut microbiome and how it affects cardiovascular health, according to a new study published in the European Journal of Nutrition.
Researchers from Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia, compared the gut microbiomes and levels of trimethylamine-n-oxide (TMAO)a key blood biomarker strongly associated with heart diseaseof 44 people who followed the Paleo diet for at least one year with a similar group of 47 people who followed the recommended Australian diet that includes whole grains.
They discovered that those who ate Paleo had levels of TMAO twice as high as their non-Paleo eating peers.
The reason? A lack of whole grains in the Paleo diet, lead researcher Angela Genoni, Ph.D., said in a press release.
We found the lack of whole grains were associated with TMAO levels, which may provide a link between the reduced risks of cardiovascular disease we see in populations with high intakes of whole grains, she said in the release.

I know my good fats from my bad fats. No bad fats in my diet as it is. :)
.
>> “and fish too.” <<
All animal fats are saturated. Oxidation can render them unsaturated, which can make them deadly.
.
>> “I cant tolerate all of the high-fat foods you have to eat.” <<
How do you know that?
Generally, consumption of saturated fats gives a general feeling of wellbeing.
BookMark!!
I’ve been on Keto for about a month now and am down a good 3 kg, have much more energy, and work better. I have a long ways to go — 125.4 kg to my target weight of 100 kg and have no intention of stopping now.
As for the gut bacteria, one small portion a week (I use egged chicken breasts dipped in potato starch and fried) of grains is all you need to keep the gut healthy without breaking ketosis — as long as you don’t consume any other carbs that day.
My super duper easy keto breakfast for 2. Melt 2 tablespoons bacon grease in skillet. Then fry 1/2 pound jimmy dean sausage in same skillet(crumbled fine as possible). When done, add 2 big handfuls of bagged slaw mix. Sauté mixture for a few minutes. In separate skillet fry 2 eggs. To plate, put sausage/slaw mixture on plate. Top with egg. Very filling. Very good.
Getting a little PERSONAL there, aren’t you? Just trust me on this one, K? ;)
I’ll have to try that myself.
The past few days I’m actually cooking some. Chicken and rice for the suffering but still hanging in there 13 year old GSD Terra.
Cancer has killed the former will eat anything edible doggie appetite.
...consumption of saturated fats gives a general feeling of wellbeing.

I have no metabolic or other medical problems, weight has been stable most of my adult life (excepting pregnancy when I gained 20 pounds). I just don’t like the texture of most animal fat, with the exception of whole hog roast/smoked brisket or pork butt and then I adore the ‘bark’. But those are uncommon foods for me.
Very little processed food, very little sugar, love potatoes, rice, homemade gravy, pasta. Mostly beef and poultry, moderate to low pork intake, lots of fresh vegetables, not too much corn, except sweet corn in season. I do eat whole fat dairy: butter, sour cream, cottage cheese, various cheeses. Moderate fruit intake, mostly in season.
I tend to think it’s genetic for the most part. Luck of the draw. I’m closing in on 77 and none of us get out alive.
Thanks. I had to look up Swerve, never heard of it before. Fortunately I can buy some about a mile away. Not a chocolate lover but found lime cream tart on Swerve site, which looks wonderful. I won’t make the shell, just the yum looking, tequila-containing lime cream. Oh my!!!!!

I can do that:)
“Sorry, wrong operator LESS than 20g carbs in a day (will lead to greatly improved health)”
Anyone who needs your correction needs to GET OUT of the clutches of the Big Medicine / Big Carb monopoly and read about what the latest research is showing...which is that we’ve been flat-out LIED TO for the past 60 years.
“Though no one would argue the nutritional merits of vegetables and lean protein...”
“They can’t let go of their biases long enough to really test this.”
Actually there have been some controlled studies, but Big Carb didn’t like the results, as they showed that, at best, lean meat was no better than fatty meat, and, if anything, was WORSE for health than fatty meat. So we don’t hear much about that work...but it is starting to trickle out anyway...
.
I don’t understand what you see as “personal” about questioning such a broad statement’s validity.
People often accept overly broad statements from such utterly unreliable sources as the “Ad Council,” etc.
Low-Carb PING!!!
Once again, a story telling us Carbs are good...being financed by a group, you guessed it, pushing ‘sustainability’, as noted in the above posting:

And, once again, FReeper success stories in going Keto and thereby NOT listening to the Big Carb liars.

My father made it to 90 with the most ridiculous eating habits on earth, and never gained a pound.
My younger brother (72) is similar to my father, weight-wise, but is in rather poor health, from trusting doctors.
The last time I went to a doctor for a medical reason (stitches) was 50 years ago!
I am MILLIMETERS (maybe micrometers) from just blowing off doctors, at least until I know something is wrong with me. Their inability to predict the future health of their patients, coupled with their downright ARROGANCE of being so sure that they are always right (particularly given that they’ve been wrong much more often than right) has got me to the end of my patience with them.
To put it another way, I DO NOT want to become yet another ‘revenue stream’ for Big Medicine...and I won’t be.

“Medical misadventure” remains the leading couse of death, every year.
It was a fair response by Diana - I suspect that she knows how her body tolerates food far better than us. You’re general statement is still certainly valid (and accurate), but it doesn’t mean that it applies to everyone.
...and I don’t think she was directing her “you” word at you personally, as stated here:
“I cant. I cant tolerate all of the high-fat foods you have to eat.”
but rather she was trying to say something like:
“I cant. I cant tolerate all of the high-fat foods ONE has to eat.”
Which is true - it’s basically carbs or fat for one’s calories. Super-high levels of protein, the other macronutrient, just isn’t a good option for anyone.
