Ohio State University is attempting to trademark what many consider to be the most commonly used word in the English language: 'The.'
The university wants the trademark the definite article to use on its school merchandise, the Columbus Dispatch reported. The trademark would cover items like T-shirts and hats, according to the application, which was filed on August 8.
Established in 1870, the school officially changed its name to 'The Ohio State University' in 1878. Nowadays, at the beginning of NFL games, ex-Buckeyes football players often emphasize 'The' when identifying themselves as Ohio State alumni during starting lineup announcements.

I have a word for them.....................
LOL
Always thought and still think THE in their name is dumb.
Which one do they want to trademark? The one pronounced “thah” or the one pronounced “Thee?”
Fricking Buckeyes.
The 2nd most annoying thing south of Michigan’s border outside of everything south of the Rio Grande.
THEy are that stupid aren’t THEy?
A sign of fading relevance
They better put in to “Da” while they’re at it.
I like to call them The University of Florida at Columbus.
Story tomorrow: Penn State seek to trademark word “WE”.
There’s more than one?
That’s the only reason to use the definite article.
Knuckleheads... oh sorry, THE Knuckleheads.
Who is infringing?
Is it Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey?
Is it Ohio University?
Cleveland State/Youngstown State/Wright State/Kent State/etc.
Universities?
Is someone selling bootleg Ohio State University gear but wouldn’t dare sell The Ohio State University gear?
Good chance that the guy who thought that THE was somehow necessary had a very very small penis.
WE are Penn State LOL!
Words are not subject to private ownership. More insanity.

;-)
And, stupid me...I thought “professors” and those who hang around with them were smart. Boy, was I wrong or what???
It was done to differentiate between Ohio State University and Ohio University to the east.
Ohio University was there first, so no idea why Ohio State University kinda picked the same name.
