Apple has activated a dormant software lock that effectively kneecaps third-party replacement batteries on some newer models of iPhone
Even using another Apple battery doesnt work, according to iFixit, as a replacement battery can apparently only be authenticated using the companys internal tools:
iFixit compared the practice to having a Check Oil light in a vehicle that can only be deactivated at a Ford dealership.

Apple will again post record profits.
Buy on the rumor, sell on the news!
Nothing like foolishly buying something that will never actually fully belong to you and forever belongs to the maker.
Not me, ever... It’s stupid.
No, they took two brand new iPhones and switched the batteries and both phones displayed errors.
They’re doing the same thing to their laptops with the T2 chips. The goal of course is to force everyone to use their horrendously expensive repair services.
Your friend lied to you. Apple sells multiple makes of earphones in the Apple Store. . . and online. Apple doesnt care what peripherals you use with its devices. You can void your warranty with a non-Apple charger if it damages the device. You can even get yourself killed by using a non-Apple charger. Thats actually happened.
If you want on or off the Apple/Mac/iOS Ping List, Freepmail me.
MacDailyNews Take: Scams abound in the unauthorized iPhone battery business and theses batteries are capable of doing much damage if not properly handled and installed.
Earlier this year, Kingsley-Hughes reported that iPhone owners who purchase replacement batteries from third-party outlets need to be careful because its possible for them to be ripped off as its easy to take old iPhone batteries and reset them to make them look like new units. Kingsley-Hughes also reports that the third-party market is also awash with cheap and nasty counterfeit batteries that are potentially unsafe.
Which is why we cringe every time some frangamdroid loser shuffles aboard our plane with a piece of Samsung junk (which are notorious for battery explosions and fires) Its only a matter of time. MacDailyNews, July 26, 2019
the third-party market is also awash with cheap and nasty counterfeit batteries that are potentially unsafe.
And here I was thinking Apple was squeezing their minions in a naked cash grab.
When now it is Apple’s altruistic heart beating on there sleeve!
If the phone flashed FAKE BATTERY/ WARRANTY VOID! on boot, that would be cool.
This is intended to nudge users to a new phone, the high-end market numbers are shrinking.
If nothing else, a case of the famous ‘bad optics’.
Just dayum! They take this battery stuff seriously!
Yeah he lied about it. Seems reasonable.
Currently using an old Windows Phone, I guess I will be buying a unopen Windows Phone box or buying a Samsung when this phone breaks.
Wow.. Throughly enjoyed that story! Indeed it’s the simple things, and living in a natural state, that brings true happiness. Without it there will always be conflict in heart and mind.
Thank you for sending it my way!
The reason I bought my first cell phone was for security.. It’s the only reason I still have one.
Those are annoying too.
OTOH, I'm a guy, I can ignore piles of dirty laundry, dust bunnies in the corners, dishes in the sink.... I can ignore a nag light.
when this phone breaks
Replacement batteries are really available for windows phones ~$10 at Wallys.
After my nice phone went through the wash (not good),a friend showed me how to change the SIMcard with a Walmart prepaid $15 phone. Worked well for voice and text, OK at best for everything else.
About 5 years ago our daughter gifted me a used Samsung S4 Active. Does everything I need AOK!
The original battery used to last 3~4 DAYS, now down to one day.
New battery $8, snaps in.
EASY PEASY!
Sort of like buying a House or Farm that the government actually owns and rents to you, via property taxes.
I thought Freepers were free traders that give business owners the power to do stupid things with their business.
We defend Google, FaceBook and Twitter's right to edit, block and manipulate the content on their website because they are a Private Business, that we do not have to use.
Maybe some of us just have ADS?
Yep, same difference except with that with .gov you don’t have much choice unless you want to live under an overpass. But how anyone could purposely put themselves in this .corp position to impress friends with toys is beyond logic.
All the years with Computers and the .MS BS burned me out on owning something that will never actually belong to you. You bought it, But it will perpetually belong to Microsoft. Plain absolutely stupid to do this on purpose if there is a legal option.
Folks keep bolstering and supporting this crap with ignorant consumerism and this is why we have so much of this crap. JUST SAY NO. It is a simple concept that actually costs NOTHING to practice and they will stop. lol :)
I remember when you couldn't even install RAM without recertifying Machine with M$. Apple always(almost) let me make copies of my hard drive and boot on other machines. They did go though that OS for specific machines phase but that was in the days of the Pepsie man I think.
Annnnnd... Now Apple... Because we still continue to put up with it...
Just say no and they will fix it. Like I say... It is a very simple concept. Deny a market and they will adjust. :)
