Julian Lewis is only 11 years old, but Nick Saban knows who he is. As Julians dad, T.C., tells it, at Alabamas youth camp in June, the Crimson Tide coach took in the majestic precision of the boys quarterbacking, sidled up beside him and said, I want you back. Every summer.
Julian had been training for that moment since he was eight, that tender age when most boys are preoccupied with searching for boogers, not receivers downfield. Thats when he started working with private QB coach Ron Veal in hopes of one day attracting not just compliments, but also scholarship offers. While the notion of elite instructors like Veal molding lab-grown QBs destined for big-time programs is not new, heres what is: Never before have so many of their pupils been so ready so fast.

What’s annoying is listneing to two chicks talk about football...
Agreed. Hot chicks have their place.
They’re DYING to get some female players into the league but it’s not the military where requirements are moved lower.
That 300 pound animal coming at you doesn’t care about PC.
He just cares about destroying you.
They’ll probably dig around for a kicker but that wont be easy either.
:: Having a college QB who could fling it around was like finding a Hope Diamond; Elway, Marino, Kosar, Testaverde, ::
What...no Jeff George???!!??
>>What...no Jeff George???!!??<<
Or Ryan Leaf?
I get several magazine subscriptions for free. Not sure how I got on this list but after receiving them, many are not even worth getting out of the mailbox and trashing.
One of them is SI. It has become so awful that when it expired, I did not want another free subscription.
Darned if SI didn’t keep coming.
I guess I will have to email them to stop getting it.
BTW, that Clemson QB was raised as a Southern Baptist by a fine Christian family.
You are SO right! And I’m a woman! I especially can’t stand Beth Mowin calling college football. SO annoying!
I’d love get those two in a small room, put a bottle of good bourbon in front of them and have them swap stories.
The final minute would be on PPV.
“You don’t have a crystal ball. You can’t look a kid and predict his future any more than I can. I’ve sat at those tables and listened to you tell those parents “When I know, I know. And when it comes to your son, I know. And you don’t, you don’t.” - Moneyball
Kids being robbed of their childhood for the sake of their father’s egos. For every Manning there are hundreds of Marinovichs.
My generation (X) are the worst at parenting because we try so hard not to be like our parents (more friends, less discipline) that we promote kids are completely unlike us.
That would make you a rookie among some here :)
Let's see Lawrence do it again before the sports pages anoint him.
GO HUSKIES.
I thought Sanduski was in jail. But since it's ALA may as well wear a jersey number rather than a inmate number...it's one or the other.
*Snicker*
One thing I’ve learned over the years, rarely is a sure thing, NFL ready, star college QB actually a sure thing, NFL ready QB. Most fizzle out. Of course there are exceptions, but most NFL star quarterbacks are from low first round and after draft positions.
Lawrence is that good and his surrounding cast so strong that Clemson should roll to another 15-0 national championship season. Then again Lawrence has nothing left to prove so avoiding injury so as not to jeopardize his NFL paycheck may be his first priority.
The arm without a brain.
I could have not said it better.
The key factor is whether a good college QB can make the transition to a good pro QB very rarely has anything to do with physical abilities. It’s what they have from the neck up. Do they have the ability to read defenses (both pre-snap and on the fly), read the field, check off receivers - sometimes more than once, know when to step up in the pocket and quickly release the ball (or eat it if necessary) - all within 3 seconds while giant men are bearing down you very quickly with the intent of taking your head off. I don’t know that this ability to slow everything down can be taught.
Most fans have no idea of the complexity of choices that faces a QB on every single snap. They have to have the mental agility to read the field and adjust to changing situations in milliseconds.
Tom Brady is probably the best example of this. After 20 years in the pros, he continues to excel at the highest levels due to his incredible discipline and preparation.
I know many don't like him but when you consider the discipline he is able to maintain off the field as well, you have to be impressed. I mean, I don't think this guy has had a single french fry or even a pretzel his entire adult life. Everything he puts in his body is geared towards keeping his body healthy and strong.
