A state representative is calling for improvements in postal workers deplorable working conditions seeing a mail carrier demonstrate how hot mail trucks get by cooking a steak on his dashboard.
Shawnna Bolick, a member of the Arizona House of Reps. (District 20), sent a letter to the president of the American Postal Workers Union, Mark Dimondstein on Thursday, urging him to look into the heat-related issue. In her letter, she explained how a worker had sent her daily updates, and photographs of a digital thermometer and the cooking steak, to show how hot his truck gets.
Over the past several weeks, his mail delivery truck has averaged about 128 degrees Fahrenheit inside his vehicle, the letter reads. This past weekend he conducted an experiment and cooked a steak to an internal temperature of medium (142 degrees) not fully thawed at 10am on his dashboard from 10am until 12:30pm.

Yeah - your tax dollars at work. I guess they didn't trust the thermometer they also used.
FedEx has Air conditioning, UPS doesn’t.......m
Give her a mule and a pack to deliver her mail from.
I agree with him. When it’s 115 degrees in Arizona, walking a postal route is different from walking one in Portland.
One size doesn’t fit all.
Since when is our “tax dollars” responsible for the heat in Arizona? That is above our pay grade.
Yeah, but that’s why we let them get away with wearing shorts.
Hey, let’s be fair, he can’t afford a stove (although I can’t afford more than hamburger).
Maybe while the time is good she can volunteer for meals on wheels.
And the price of postage will increase again. . . and again. . . and again. What an outrage. . .especially for senior citizens who depend on the postal service.
I thought the USPS was not a government agency anymore.
It’s more like a third world country, though. They lose money and the U.S. Government “subsidizes” them to balance their budget.
My mail carrier used to carry a leather bag with a strap over the shoulder that held at least 50lbs of mail, while he walked the neighborhood in 100+ degree heat.
Oh, and he hustled landscaping business for the weekends while he was on his route.
She can afford steak?? Boo-frickin’ hoo.
Nice strategy, extremely poor execution. Oops! LOL
A $6 dollar steak ain’t gonna break the taxpayer bank.
But getting in and out of an air conditioned vehicle can be very bad on a body. It would make more sense for them to get an early start and finish up earlier.
Nothing has changed in Arizona, summers are HOT.
Lots of tough guys here who’d faint (or worse) if it was 128 in their vehicle.
Is the postal “person” forced to work that job? Perhaps an office job might suit that “person” better.
I’m a female, and at 54, was helping my youngest son deliver his morning papers.
I’d load up a bag on my back, and slung one across my shoulder, and carried newspapers...as many as I could pack in them so I’d have enough to finish the streets I did for him. And I never threw the papers. I placed them up on their porches in the door, or in their mail boxes. Climing up and down stairs, I lost more than 10 pounds doing that. Plus I worked a full 8+ hours as a Correctional Officer for NY State. At almost 72 now, I have trouble dragging my six-packs of soda and groceries up the stairs, but if I take it one step at a time (bad knees), I can get up them without being winded. Neither of my sons lives near me, so I have to do for myself. As my father used to say: “I’m in great shape...for the shape that I’m in.” :-)
USPS is the only government agency that has to “prepay” health insurance thru Obama care, $5 billion a year.
