US Secret Service switching to 9mm Glock pistols

The United States Secret Service is moving forward with plans to outfit its agents with Glock 9 millimeter (mm) pistols to replace the agency's existing Sig Sauer .357-caliber duty weapons -- part of a larger move among U.S. law enforcement agencies towards the lighter, more efficient guns.

“The Secret Service has been one of the few agencies that has maintained Sig Sauer as a permanent duty weapon for more than 20 years,” said Donald J. Mihalek, a retired senior Secret Service agent and ABC News contributor.

The Secret Service and Glock declined to comment on the move, but a federal official with direct knowledge of the deal confirmed the agency's plan to switch to the Glock 9 mm pistols. Details of the new deal were recently posted on fedbizops.gov, the federal government's website for posting procurement opportunities above $25,000 for private sector companies.

The Secret Service -- whose primary mission is to protect presidents, vice-presidents and their families -- employs about 3,200 special agents, 1,300 uniformed officers and more than 2,000 other support personnel, according to its website.

‘Negligent’ discharge.

"Negligent" is certainly a kinder word than the first one popped into my skull.

"The problem is they aren’t generally good shots."

I agreed with that. And I pointed out they are just as bad a shot with 6 in the cylinder as they are with 15 in mag. You can just do a lot more damage with 15 errant shots. But there are also a lot of good shots in LE and the Military who can take very good advantage of the extra rounds a semi-auto provides. I like your earlier suggestion that LE should be required to practice with their firearm regularly. I think at a minimum an hour on the range every week. And perhaps have them evaluated each time by an experienced range master.

“...the inevitable Glock accidental discharge...”

I’ve never had that happen, actually.

That is why. Its why fedgov decided to switch from 10mm to 40 cal back in the 90s. Too much for the girls.

They just work, always. I’ve never had a problem with them.

Like anything else, proper PM and cleaning, it’ll serve ya well.

If they only have six (6) rounds, they might actually stop and think about it. And maybe even practice a little more.

Nor I.

One of those deals where “the gun just went off!”

Seems to happen football players in bars, and FBI agents on dance floors, and drunkards in general.

Yea, $799 for the 5.7, 1600.00 for the H&K , which last time I looked, it was selling for 4200.00, and that was five years ago.

I don't understand people who buy expensive guns for their looks, and then stick them in a safe and never carry them.

I don't understand them either, and I am one.

Or was, I should say, before the Great Fires of 2018.

Somebody nailed it. They could have switched to the Sig P229 Legion for $800-$900 but went with the the $500 Glock. Look for an increase in accidental discharges in 3-2-1. 😆

Sig P229 Legion

Nice. Is that single-stack mag? I do like the DA/SA type of automatic.

The recoil on .45 comes from the slide cycling not the explosion.

I would disagree with your post but...Bottom line is you want to shoot guns that are comfortable and that you can shoot well with, so find your fav and just get practiced. I am willing to bet that the RIGHT .45 for you is out there, and recoil is a function of the achieved muzzle velocity and mass of the bullet fired and the mass of the gun. Any slide cycling reduces the recoil. My 1911 in .45 has no more kick than some of my 9mm handguns.

And they are made here in Georgia. At least mine was.

Just because one doesn’t carry their multi-thousand dollar gun doesn’t mean nobody ever sees it.

9mm hollow points go in and just mess up things. They don’t go through much of anything.

I wouldn’t mind an upgrade to a gen4 or 5, but, right now, the budget won’t support it.

We are cruising in our sailboat, and, once we start going to other countries, we may have to store weapons, or, FedEx them home, and, then have them FedEx’d back, depending on the Freedom level of the country being visited.

9mm FMJ will penetrate (go through), but there is lots of good 9mm defensive ammo now (JHP and other types) that will transfer just as much of the energy to the first thing it hits as a .45 will. The gun is the same but the ammo choices have gotten much better.
