Major Fire Engulfs Oil Refinery in Houston, 37 Injured

A fire broke out Wednesday at an ExxonMobil plant in Houston, Texas. Video footage from the scene showed a large plume of smoke coming from the oil refinery. ExxonMobil has urged local residents to shelter as a precaution, ABC News reported.

With the loss of the Philly refinery by fire a few weeks ago, gas prices and chemical prices will likely go up.”
If you had read the article you would know that this plant does not produce gasoline.

Are our refineries secured?
How many of our refineries are down? How many are producing?
This fire was in their oldest ethylene plant... nothing to do with the refinery.
Chemical reporting is SO bad... even in Texas, where you’d think they might know better.
This fire is mostly propane. If you had some really long poles, you could grill some steaks on it.
Byproducts are minimal.... as long as they can contain it to this area, should be next to zero off-site impact.

I have a lot of life long trench from Houston to Winnie to Beaumont and lumberton many work in the oil patch or the refineries sadly this is not an uncommon occurrence I recall the Monsanto far years back and others
Perfect excuse to jack up the price of gas another 50 cents a gallon.
If this fire decreases the supply of available gas, what else would you expect to happen?
Thankfully, what you say is just not correct anymore. Fires like this one are VERY unusual. Exxon sure hasn't had one in a long time.
I actually worked at that Monsanto plant, many years after the explosion... when it was re-named Sterling Chemicals.
Sabotage?
Fire was in the polypropylene unit of the Baytown Olefins Plant.
I live in Baytown,TX. This is not a major fire.
This particular part of the Baytown Exxon-Mobile refinery complex is very small and involves only one of many stacks in the polyolefins operation. If that part of the refinery is not up and running in the next week, I’d be very surprised.
Exxon-Mobile recently completed a $15+ billion expansion of the refinery; and it only covers a very small part of the the refinery complex.
This small fire will not affect the prices of anything.
The Baytown Exxon-Mobile refinery complex is the largest refinery complex in the United States. I believe Exxon Mobile has a larger one somewhere in the Far East.
Their docks are so big, they can dock three super tankers and a smaller one at the same time.
IF this fire decreased the supply of available gas a tiny fraction of 1 percent, I’d expect the price to rise a tiny fraction of its current cost. However, profiteers will use it as an excuse to drive the price up far more than the miniscule decrease in supply merits.

There is overcapacity, so I doubt it, and especially not in Texas

How many new refineries have been built recently?
In Texas, that would be about $150 billion in the last few years, with another $100+ billion to get started in the next few years.
Unless you live in the area, you can’t imagine the number of refineries in the areas east of Houston, and there are plenty more up and down the Texas coast from LA to Mexican borders.
I know relatives who live in FL and their schools start up mid Aug. Maybe staff are in the schools getting ready?
It shouldn't, but it probably will. I'd expect the price to go up about 10 cents a gallon and stay up through Labor Day.

Interesting. So if the supply was decreased by 50%, you'd allow a 50% increase in price?
