Remote, hidden in dense forest, protected by nearby lakes and marshes - the Wolf's Lair in Poland was a secure headquarters for Adolf Hitler in World War Two.
So much so, that the Nazi dictator spent 850 days at the vast, secret complex in 1941-1944, before withdrawing to his Berlin bunker.
Now the Polish state's Srokowo Forest District, which manages the site, is giving the Wolf's Lair a big makeover to pull in more tourists.
The district's spokesman Sebastian Trapik told the BBC that the foresters were "making every effort" to maintain "due seriousness and respect for historical truth" at the crumbling complex.
But critics argue that insensitive "attractions", such as amateurish re-enactments with people wearing Nazi uniforms, could turn it into a sort of ghoulish "Disneyland".

While stationed in Germany during the 60's, my wife and I spent a week in this area. Definitely beautiful, enchanting but with a somewhat ominous and mysterious aire about it. There was a fabulous pre-war hotel there called the General Walton Walker which was made into an R & R destination for GI's. You could walk from there around Hitler's Berghof house. Much destruction still evident...bomb craters, mine warnings etc. Once in a lifetime experience.

I agree with your assessment of Hitler’s three largest blunders.
However, think of the enormous resources lost trying to invade the USSR, and now think of what might have happened if the same resources were used to invade England. It would have worked, as England would have been eventually overwhelmed and beaten.
Then there would be no land base for D-Day to be launched from. Actually, there never would have been a D-Day. Hitler would not only have had the French Navy intact, but much of what would have been left of the British Navy.
Thank God that the Bavarian Corporal was a mad man.

I too visited Berchtesgaden a couple of times during my tours in Germany. After the major withdrawl of US troops in the mid-90’s the Army returned the General Walker Hotel to the German Government. The German government then destroyed the hotel, except for a small portion and all of the other remains of Goering’s and Himmler’s houses (mainly foundations) so as to prevent the site from becoming a shrine for Neo-Nazi’s.

But for God's sake, if you go, don't bring your camera and take Selfies. I couldn't believe how many people I saw taking pictures there.
There was no way to hit the UK with the same force as hitting the USSR — the Luftwafe threw everything it had and lost. But on the east you have basically one big plain from Siberia to Germany - ideal tank country.
The Germans could not have used the same resources to invade England.
The biggest mistake the Germans made was shifting from tactical bombing to terror bombing civilians in London and Coventry, it stiffened the Brits’ resolve.
There was the possibility that had the Germans refrained from bombing London, over time, the Brits would have been more inclined to sue for peace. Hitler never really wanted to invade England, he just wanted them neutralized, to free him up to attack Russia.

No question, if you go there today and walk around with an appreciate of what went on back then on the very same streets you are walking on, it is mysterious and eerie experience
When I went up the elevator at the Eagles Nest I could not help but think of all the evil people that had ridden the same elevator....Hitler included......
The guide we had that showed up the Bergoff, had a picture album of the original place and we stood at the gigantic picture window you see in some photographs, it was a bizarre but awesome experience....
