picture is b&ww! optical illusion that tricks your brain into seeing monochrome as COLOR
Press From ^ | 30 July 2019

Why do we see color in a black-and-white snap? Upon closer inspection, one can see that the students are actually covered in streaks of red, blue, yellow, orange and green lines. The brain is tricked into filling in the blanks with the mind, giving the illusion of solid colors where there are none.

'Only the lines have color. What you "see" is what your brain predicts the reality to be, given the imperfect information it gets.'

. 'An over-saturated colored grid overlaid on a grayscale image causes the grayscale cells to be perceived as having color.'

I see the colors and I see the colored lines.

BUT thinking the illusion would disappear when zooming outside the grid, still color?

???

At work now. When I get home I’ll put it in Photoshop and check the color gamut. Fascinating effect.

Didn’t work for me, either.

Because our color resolution is much lower than our black-and-white resolution.

I see a greyscale picture with colored lines across it.

Not bw. The lines are in color. I don’t like to be fooled.
And the trees?

Works for me. The article says some people can't see it.

Just brought it into photoshop and enlarged it. It makes sense... it’s B&W, with various colored lines in a grid pattern to bring upon the color illusion. Cool.

I’d imagine one could go to one of the “colored” shirts, and change the lines to some other color, and then see it as the new color. There probably is nothing special about the B&W’ness of the basic line-less shirt.

So it is monochromatic except where it is multicolor.

Applications for this would include the reduction of colored ink usage in printers since you don’t have to print a larger number of pixels in the color.

Would have to see what the absolute minimum number number would be to allow for small color area differentiation.

And then you could scale up or down depending on a) how much resolution you needed and b) how much colored ink cost you would want to use.

I don’t think it’s a true visual/optical illusion in the sense used by neuropsychologists. True illusions involve some surprising visual processing effect. In this case, if the separation between color lines is less than some particular angular amount (may be related to cone spacing in the retina), or are blurred, or seen off-axis, then some color bleed-over occurs in the middle to executive brain regions. Bascially an averaging function. Big deal. Nothing novel or interesting.

Kind of like how the progressives scram racists, homophobe or sexist at their opponents without any facts to back up their claims but that is how their followers see those opponents.

It is very cool, but if there are colored lines across it, it’s not really a black and white picture. Still my mind filled it all in.
