Bruce Lee’s Daughter Saddened by ‘Mockery’ in ‘Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood’ (Exclusive)
The Wrap ^ | July 30, 2019 | Tim Malloy

Bruce Lee’s daughter, Shannon Lee, says it was “disheartening” to see Quentin Tarantino depict her father in “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” as “an arrogant a–hole who was full of hot air.”

In the film, (spoilers follow), Brad Pitt’s stuntman character, Cliff Booth, trades cocky insults with Bruce Lee (Mike Moh), and the two agree to an informal, best two-out-of-three rounds fight on the set of “The Green Hornet” TV show. Lee easily knocks Booth down in the first round, but in the second, Booth slams Lee into a car, stunning him. The fight is interrupted before the third round.

Shannon Lee said it’s disheartening to see her father portrayed as an arrogant blowhard, because in truth, as an Asian-American in 1960s Hollywood, he had to work much harder to succeed than Booth and Rick Dalton (Leonardo Dicaprio), the fictional, white protagonists of the film.

“Hateful 8 was...”

Terrible or awful. Go with awful.

Bruce Lee was a cocky SOB. His daughter was just four when he died and almost certainly never saw that side of her dad. Tarantino just turned Lee’s real personality up to 11.

And on the 8th day, God made Salma...

“No thanks. I’ve already been married.” I always wondered if that refusal may have been a bit impulsive and unwise.

I LOVED Pulp Fiction. One of my all time faves. Nothing Tarantino has done after has been good.

I have always found Tarantino to be overrated. Pulp Fiction is about the only film of his I really liked. He can construct the occasional good scene, but I don't think his films gel over all. For the most part, I think he is merely imitative of other (better) filmmakers.

Yep, it is mostly imitation but he has style.

Actually, the two main characters were “inspired” by Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham.

Hurrumph!

I agree, “Inglorious Bastard” was great.

I still think his best movie was “Reservoir Dogs”.

I also really liked “True Romance”. Especially the scene with Dennis Hopper and Christopher Walken.

“Django Unchained” was also very good. Samuel L Jackson was incredible in his role. “Boss, why is that n*gger on a horse?

It is a Great flick. It is a period peice, a buddy movie, and a ‘what might have been’ movie that makes for an excellent escape to the past for a few hours.

I thought his Generalship at Gettysburg to have been over reaching and the true cause of the disaster. Longstreet has been much maligned with Jubal Early and others being the true cause of the failures elsewhere on the line.

Could have cut at least an hour or so out of “Kill Bill” too, made it one long movie, and it would have been better.

The last really tightly edited movie he made was Death Proof, and I think that is only because he was reined in working with Rodriguez again, knowing he had to fit it in a double billing.

Kentucky Fried Movie. Now I have to find it and watch it, but like so many movies from that era, you have to have a sense of humor, a sense of irony and not be PC at all. Kind of along the lines of Top Secret and Airplane. Other movies have made fun of Lee before this, his voice and mannerisms especially.

To each his own. I thought IG started out good but bogged down to boredom when the focus shifted to the French cinema. However, the actor who played the SS Colonel was incredible with a great character and dialogue to work with.

Well, if he was he had every right to be.

The scene in the Tavern was my favorite, the actor who played Major Hellstrom was really good.

If you loved PF, I don't know how you couldn't love Inglourious Basterds.

This was a great movie. Brad and Leonardo were excellent. No PC BS just straight up originality.

Honest to goodness, Fistful of Yen mixes humor, satire, and even some generalizations but still ends up honoring the genre. There is some great fighting. Yes, parts of KFM are cringe-inducing by community standards (but it's worth noting that the actors may have their own views on if it's bad or not) but that why there is a fast forward button and nobody rioted when the movie came out (and nobody forced the actors to do what they did).

And the capitol of Nebraska is Lincoln.
