In this age of targeted advertising, I dont think I have ever been owned by an algorithm as hard as whatever told Amazon to try to and get me to watch The Boys. YouTube ads, sponsored hashtags, Facebook feed spots, I literally could not escape ads for the superhero show, and it was like Amazon was only stopping short of having someone physically shake me and yell This is a show for you! in my face.
Well, the algorithm was right.
I really, really loved The Boys, which clocks in at a tight eight episodes for its first season, which automatically wins it some points off the bat. The show follows a group of humans trying to take down a faux-Justice League of corporate-backed superheroes that are all smiles for the cameras, but behind the scenes, truly depraved and horrifying.

At first blush, I was ready to give it a look; but then the review continued, describing a fantasy. I like to watch stuff that is at least plausible. So I’ll pass, knowing that there are plenty of people who enjoy fantasy genres.
I think I need a lot more info, he keeps saying how depraved it is and you need a stomach for it, makes you cringe, etc.. also did he say the false heroes are corporate types? I sense a depraved depiction of capitalism.
Immediate warning sign, the main villain is a bleached blonde guy to resemble Trump. They ruined Stranger Things with that ploy (along with the surprise lesbianism).
You all should watch the accurate and well done movie The Highwaymen on Netflix.
It’s a very dark and brutal take on the entire superhero genre. And actually pretty close to the premise of the original comic books, too.
I’ve heard about that; maybe I will.
(just kidding)
I think you are understandably worried, but not in this case, assuming it is like the graphic novels.
There is no particular political viewpoint, except that power corrupts.
The main bad guy was a literal Nazi scientist who experimented on people in camps, back in WWII. His technology was picked up by a shady American defense contractor, much like Operation Paperclip in real life.
And by squeamish, Im talking about a scenes where a power mad guy kills a baby because he didnt consider normal humans as remotely significant, except as a means for enjoyment.
It’s brutal. I’ve seen the first two episodes and haven’t ditched it yet.
I don’t see any political message, but I didn’t go in looking for one either.
How brutal is it? Are we talking “Brightburn” levels? Wife loves superhero movies but too much gore gets to her.
It’s bad acting, horrible writing and only fit for the easily amused.
highway men... seen it...
loved it.
well done.
recommend it.
I just binged on the first season. In my opinion it is easily as good if not better than Breaking Bad or House of Cards which are two of my faves.
If you can get past episode five which is the obligatory homos and sin are are good and christians are bad then it’s a great series,
“How brutal is it? “
There’s an early scene when a guy and his gal are standing on the sidewalk holding hands and a super-speedster named A-Train literally runs through her and she explodes.
Her boyfriend is left holding both her hands which are no longer attached to anything.
Thanks! Sounds like my better-half will sit this one out but I’ll binge. :)
I won’t watch it, but I have been hoping for like this ever since Captain America supported Mexican drug gangs and kept the border open for them.
Its crap compared to the book. Im watching and not at all impressed despite knowing and liking the actors.
@SPOILERS@
They deviated so far from the original its just irritating. No, queen mave was not a lesbian. While the Homelander is played well, hes a freaking giant, not a normal guy.
They captured the essence of the characters but it may as well be a different story altogether. Right from the start it is just wrong.
It is also hard to watch where the comic book was perversely enjoyable.
Anyway, its passable. No great achievement. It should be completely redone as a cartoon so they can fully flesh out the story, not the lame crap they turned out.
Marvel and DC movies do not equal Marvel and DC comic book tales of superheroes.
The movies are WAY dumbed down over the comic books. Deadly Skybeam at the climax of almost every “episode”.
>>And by squeamish, Im talking about a scenes where a power mad guy kills a baby because he didnt consider normal humans as remotely significant, except as a means for enjoyment.
Sounds like every rotten Democrat in Congress. Cheering on killing of babies even AFTER they are born these days.
