VERNON TOWNSHIP — A labrador retriever was shot and killed by a police officer Saturday, sparking concern among local animal rescue groups as township police said an investigation is underway.

The three-year-old dog, named Hiro, was an Eleventh Hour Rescue alumni, according to that organization.

The founder of Buddha Dog Rescue & Recovery, Nicole Asher, said she was in the Scenic Lakes neighborhood, a private lake community, to help with a case of a lost dog when she saw other police responding to the scene.

According to Vernon police, they receive a call on Saturday about an aggressive dog along Tall Oaks Drive. The person calling in the complaint said that a dog was running loose in the neighborhood and had come close to him, while growling.

The responding officer walked down the street and spoke with another resident, who said the dog belonged to a neighbor. While the officer was on the road, police said the dog ran up to him and began to aggressively charge towards him, without listening to commands to stop. The officer then drew his gun and shot the dog, killing it.

“I don’t blame the cop

No bad dogs, just bad owners”

I do.

As best we try dogs sometimes get loose. Twice my German shorthair got loose and roamed for awhile. Fortunately, retrieved her safely each time.

When was the last time you knew anyone that taught their dog a ”stop “ command? The cop just wanted to shoot something to get his ptsd disability.

If there are no bad dogs just bad owners why are you defending shooting the dog?

If dogs were such great judges of character, a lot more of them would run away from home.

The owners got their dog shot, it is their responsibility

Too bad you can’t see that.

My Black Lab LOVED the USPS.

The Trucks, the uniforms, the carriers.

She would go off at full speed, leaping over hedges and such to greet the carrier a few doors down.

Good thing we had a regular carrier who liked dogs and was totally familiar with his biggest local fan.

Just tragic all around.

By the way, I always respect your posts. You're one of the special FRs who are always authentic. You are open about yourself, what to think, and share from the heart.

RIP little guy.

I have two labs. They’ve gotten out a few times. Black labs are roamers. Thankfully I have great, older neighbors who call me right away.

Worst time ever: My dogs (aka Dumbass and her daughter) went up to a Christian School for developmentally disabled boys. They terrorized the boys and killed the children’s pet chickens they raised from chicks. I’m very thankful for having good neighbors. I re-reimbursed the school and paid for a fence to be put up protecting the next batch of chicks. I brought the dogs by a few times to introduce them to the boys to settle everyone’s nerves. Real nice, great kids. The dogs though, they only go out together if I take them. Otherwise it’s one by one. Things have been fine for over a year.

The best defense against a lab’s bluff charge is a Frisbee.

Thank you very much, that makes me feel great.

I do type faster than my brain thinks sometimes and I DO need to work on that.

But yes I am very open about myself, just this past week admitting that i drive away from drive thru windows after paying without my food sometimes :)

I thought Vietnam was a recently formed country, maybe 100 or so years old :)

And it sometimes takes me till the end of a sarcasm article to realize it’s sarcasm!!

Have a great one.

*IF YOU FIND ME CALL MY DAD* 802XXXXXXX.
Small town kindness. <<

Id did that with the last dog i found with 1 or my chickens in its mouth.....I called the # and told them they could retrieve the collar AND the dead dog as soon as they replaced my chickens....(He killed 3)..They called the cops on me!.....but weeks later in court I got $60 in restitution and court costs...I didn't charge for recycling the dog at the local landfill...but I did save the collar for them in case they got another dog.. ....

Well I hope hero copper is proud of himself and bragging to his buddies. Dumbshit probabaly mistook tail wagging for agression. Who in the hell are they hiring these days?

Maybe you ought to want for the body camera video before you jump to conclusions. If I'm reading the story correctly, it appears that the cop wasn't the only person who thought the dog was aggressive. While labs aren't generally aggressive, some are. I have been bitten twice by dogs, both were labs.

Maybe the cop was in the wrong but as it stands now, it is a he-said, she-said situation.

The labrador should have put his paws up.

PAWS UP, DON’T SHOOT

I’ve had dogs in the past, including labs and a pit mix. Currently have two small mutts. I would be heartbroken if this happened to a dog of mine — most of all I’d be furious at myself for letting my dog get loose. As much as we love them, dogs are not people. I would not expect someone to let a dog, especially a large dog, bite or maul them or get close enough to do if it’s coming quickly, so to determine its intent.

People saying “it’s a lab!” Implying that labs can’t be aggressive — sorry, BS. Again, had a wonderful Labrador and he could be aggressive under certain circumstances, despite being one of the sweetest and generally least aggressive dogs I’ve known. Mailmen set him off.

“Tail was probably wagging, idiot cop can’t see the difference between aggression and playfulness?” — Had a pit mix that would wag when she was feeling angry. You might know your dog, recognize his moods and mannerisms, but don’t expect anyone else to. A wagging tail doesn’t necessarily mean you’re safe.

End of the day, best thing you can do for your dog is train it to stop and drop and stay, no matter the circumstances, at the word “down”, which seems to be what people instinctively yell when scared by a dog. Takes a lot of work but it could save your dog’s life under many circumstances.

Dogs aren’t people. Your dog is your property, take responsibility for it. Same as you lock your car, protect your valuables, etc — keep control of your animals.

I hear you but it would take more than one bite for me to unload on man’s best friend. However, if they were doing it to my dogs that’s a different story.
