VERNON TOWNSHIP — A labrador retriever was shot and killed by a police officer Saturday, sparking concern among local animal rescue groups as township police said an investigation is underway.

The three-year-old dog, named Hiro, was an Eleventh Hour Rescue alumni, according to that organization.

The founder of Buddha Dog Rescue & Recovery, Nicole Asher, said she was in the Scenic Lakes neighborhood, a private lake community, to help with a case of a lost dog when she saw other police responding to the scene.

According to Vernon police, they receive a call on Saturday about an aggressive dog along Tall Oaks Drive. The person calling in the complaint said that a dog was running loose in the neighborhood and had come close to him, while growling.

The responding officer walked down the street and spoke with another resident, who said the dog belonged to a neighbor. While the officer was on the road, police said the dog ran up to him and began to aggressively charge towards him, without listening to commands to stop. The officer then drew his gun and shot the dog, killing it.

This happened in my Town in Vernon NJ.

The dog was a rescue who had a pronounced underbite so his bottom teeth are always exposed.

This guy needs to quit and move somewhere else. The dog apparently was very playful and not "vicious" at all. Deputy Riviera apparently was in fear for his life.

There is a long Facebook thread on it complete with both those dazzled by shiny badges and enjoy licking boots as well as those calling for the patrolman's job or worse.

My advice to him. Leave. Go somewhere else. You are not wanted here any longer. Anyone who pulls a gun on a lab probably has no issue pulling a gun at the slightest provocation. He's sorry now. He needs to be more sorry, somewhere else.

The officer has the highest number of uses of force in the PD.

I saw the posts, seems to be two sides to this story.

My solution, keep your dog on your property, fence, chain, invisible fence, or a combination of the three. Then no one, cops, neighbors, etc won’t shoot your dog when it appears aggressive to them.

I don’t blame the cop

No bad dogs, just bad owners

Knee jerk reaction training. I guess that training is moot when punks throw buckets of water on them....until the inevitable day that it’s actually GASOLINE. ‘Til then, kill them dogs...ya know, just to be sure and cuz it’s politically safe.

Sounds like the cop had every right to shoot the dog.

Labs need to have Constitutional Rights, unlike PitBulls.

Politically safe? He wouldn't get half the blowback if he'd killed a white PERSON.

Dogs are property

Keep your property on your property and nobody will shoot your property

It is very simple

The same result would happen if this dog ran out in the middle of a busy road or drank anti freeze out of a neighbor’s collection bucket.

Maybe.

Maybe he's also got the wrong temperament to be a LEO considering he's got 3 times the amount of "uses of force" as any other officer.

Somehow the UPS drivers and mailmen don’t shoot too many of the same dogs.

Some say dogs are good judge of character.

I don’t know if the officer was right or wrong or neither, but I do know you post makes a LOT of sense.

When it is an aggressive threatening dog in the street vs someone with a gun then I’m afraid the dog often loses. The police responded to a report of an aggressive dog loose in the street so I don’t blame the police for taking some sort of action. I just wonder why they can’t use some non-lethal means instead of killing it.

I think you miss the point......

if it was a “Black” Lab and the cop was white...it was a racist act...

If it was a “Golden” Lab and the cop was black....it was justified.....

Different breeds have different dispositions......just like their owners..../s

Dogs are sentient beings, legally bound to their “owners”.

Unlike me as a kid, free to roam at will, dogs do need supervision when around others, especially in the ‘hood.

On the other hand, in the NF my dog is free to be a mutual personal trainer to the deer in the Spring, Summer and Fall and my point guard for Bobcats and Mountain Lions.

Sad story.

As the mother of three Labs, I can’t imagine.

Occasionally one will wander away from me; earlier this summer they ended up at the town hall; The town cloerk followed the instructions on his collar: *IF YOU FIND ME CALL MY DAD* 802XXXXXXX.
Small town kindness.
