National Park Service reminds people not to pet bobcats

ust in case you’re tempted by that adorable wild creature … don’t pet the bobcat in the park.

The National Park Service posted a public service announcement Wednesday telling people that bobcats are not pets.

They advise that visitors to the parks should resist the urge to pet and hold young bobcats, regardless of how cute they might be. They can claw and bite.

Keep wildlife wild says the park service.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission includes bobcat (Lynx rufus) on its list of wild animals in the state.

The National Park Service maintains three areas in Southwestern Pa.: Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville; Fort Necessity National Battlefield in Farmington; and Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site in Cresson.

Good advice, but hard to believe this is much of a risk given the density and "shyness", aka intelligence, of bobcats.

They can claw and bite.

So can my daughter's tabby.

So I guess I shouldn’t give Smokey the bear a hug?

Seems hard to believe that is necessary.

Sort of like saying “don’t grab a chainsaw by the chain, especially when it is running”.

It’s good advice. Also, scorpions and porcupines are not appropriate for a petting zoo.

That’s what happens when you have city Folk go out into the country. Bless their hearts they have to be told not the pet bobcats.

My dog is very unhappy when the occasional bobcat passes through.

[Our Montana State Graduate is a notable exception.]

Kinda thinking that the ‘Crazy Cat Ladies’ already know this and aren’t the ones roaming around in the wild, petting Baby Bobcats, LOL!

When you’re not as smart as a Crazy Cat Lady when it comes to petting wildlife, you’re in big, BIG trouble and probably SHOULD be culled from the herd. ;)

This is why there are so many idiots running around. Nature is no longer allowed to cleanse the gene pool.

Looks like my Calvin.

I do not advise petting him without the proper introductions either.

Try and catch one with your bare hands!

I was in Custer Nation Park in South Dakota about 10 years ago. There were some Bison on the other side of a little foot bridge and creek. The total distance from them was less than 50 yards. I stayed on the other side but a dumb couple decided to cross the bridge and walk right up to them. It is those kind of stupid people that force park rangers to shoot and kill animals.
