2020 Harley-Davidson LiveWire first ride: Harley's electric future is bright

Hello again, old friend. What you're looking at is the Harley-Davidson LiveWire, a very different bike from a very traditional motorcycle company. It's Harley's first EV, and the first EV from what I would consider a major, mainstream motorcycle company. At $29,799, it's also one of the most expensive. I was lucky to ride a prototype of this bike way back in 2014, and while I'm not entirely sure what's taken so long to bring it to production, I'm very glad to say that this thing was worth the wait.

(please see link, for full article, and a good video)

I think those that concentrate on the concept of “the ride” miss the point.

The electric Harley was developed and introduced in America. However, it is very possible the real market is in places like India and Burma and Indonesia where a cycle is the primary means of personl transportation.

Like it or not, the market to “Riders” has seemingly peaked and is not what it once was. Looking forward, as a company planner, a new market must be developed if the company is to survive

This is how innovation happens in a capitalist system. Someone gives a new idea a try. It works or it doesn’t. If it works, it sells like hotcakes. If not, it goes out of production.

Any car or motorcycle that can’t produce it’s own electricity isn’t worth anything.
It’s as useful as having a spring and a wind up key to move around.

Hah! Vrrooom motors! I remember when those came out! My parents wouldn’t get one for me, so I made fun of the kids that had them. My bicycle was pre-high handle bars, pre-banana seat - so my bicycle career was just a little before that era.

A motorcycle that you can’t jump on a take a empromptu trip of 100-200 miles is a worthless POS.

With a 70 mile (at best) range you are limited to trips of less than 35 miles, which is a sad joke.

“Vehicle batteries need to be standardized for electric to ever take off”

Agreed.

I can buy standard flashlight batteries anywhere.
Why can’t I buy standard electric car batteries the same way?

My brother is a retired PO, and responded to many an accident involving a bike. If there was a cage driver to blame, one of his usual questions was, “it’s obvious that you didn’t see it, but did you hear anything?”

The answer was also obvious: “No.”

His opinion of loud pipes making biking safer is: “not much”.

He said, “mostly, bike accidents in general come from DUI. And bikers gotta maintain balance as well as drive. If bikers would quit drinking and driving, the accident, AND associated death rates, would plummet”.
