FULL TITLE: Deadly heatwave to leave DC as hot as DEATH VALLEY this weekend as 200M brace for temperatures in excess of 100F sparking NYC to declare an emergency and roads to buckle
A brutal heatwave is unfurling across two-thirds of the nation, blighting the east with temperatures that will make Washington DC feel as hot as Death Valley, and roast much of the country with 100-degree heat.
The crushing mass of hot air is likely to blanket the region, home to a third of the U.S. population, through Sunday with little overnight relief, said meteorologist David Roth of the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center.
'There are 124 million people under a heat advisory or excessive heat warning - that's a third of the population,' Roth said. As of Friday, the heat wave sprawled from Kansas to the Atlantic Coast, and from South Carolina north to Maine. It was expected to intensify on Saturday and Sunday.
The heat index for DC is forecast at 111F for Saturday, within two degrees of the index expected for Death Valley.
n Sioux Falls, South Dakota, soaring temperatures of 93F with a heat index of 107F were reported when portions of Insterstate 229 buckled and cracked.
On Friday night, a massive power outage was reported in the Detroit metro area, affecting some 80,000 customers of DTE Energy.
Fearing potential fatalities, New York City declared a state of local emergency and canceled a number of major outdoor events.
'Hot weather is dangerous and can kill. People with chronic physical and mental health conditions should use air conditioning if they have it, and get to a cool, air conditioned place if they don't,' said New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot.

Welcome to an average day in Louisiana!
It’s mid July. Mid July is hot.
What’s the problem?
Oh, I know. It’s GLOBAL WARMING!!
Hmmmm... no. Heat index factoring has always been the same, this is not new at all.
America isn’t France or England. Air conditioning is common and even people who don’t have air conditioning can find a way to get to a place that has it.
Just a reminder to stay safe this weekend. Drink lots of water, don’t over do it, Look after your elderly neighors, avoid lots of caffine, just take it easy.
And every year lots of American people die in heat waves. Usually older who were out working in the yard and over heated. It’s not worth it. Just take it easy this week end. Stay inside.
Undoubtedly the “Green New Deal” people and carbon footprint fanatics will have their A/C running full blast.
I will believe there’s a climate emergency when the people telling me there’s a climate emergency start acting like there’s a climate emergency.
Sounds like a nice day for some NY Democrat politicians to host campaign picnics in their district’s and state parks.
Nadler, Schumer, Gillibrand, Mahoney, all the NY House Democrats who voted with AlGreen to Impeach.
Well I’m sitting here thinking that in about 14 or 15 weeks winter will be here. This heat wave will be a distant memory. We might actually be wishing for it, who knows?
So. Summer. Got it.
The difference between someone collapsing outside because they overworked themselves and thousands dying in their homes because they had no choice is the difference between us and Europe. That’s what makes it so ironic that the Daily Mail is worried about an American heat wave.
Strange last winter they ran stories about our cold spell. Another FReeper brought that up too! “Why are they obsessed with our weather?”
I’ve gotten to the point where I post their news about America because CNN does not cover it.
I don’t mind hot weather at all.
I NEVER complain.
I HATE winter.
60 is COLD
I’m not fond of winter but extreme heat is scary too. When railroads and streets buckle then s*** just got real, know what I mean?
110 F. in Phoenix is called just another day.
And air conditioning in your house?? Yeh right....you fanned yourself with a piece of cardboard
“Whats the problem?”
Not really a problem, only here in the OBX NC we usually get this type of heat and humidity from mid to late August.
Its mid July. Mid July is hot.
Well here in central Texas we have yet to have 1 day reach 100F.
Its mid July, and one of the mildest summers I can remember.
Pasture grass still has some spring clover grass growing green. That stuff usually burns up mid June, but its still green and growing. We should be in the baking mode right now but next Wednesday forecast calls for a low of 66F for Texas, in July. 8 day forecast and the hottest projected temp is 97.
Bizarro world!!
Shhhhh! No official 100° in North Texas (DFW) area yet. I’ll take it. Anything over 80° and I’m miserable
