The Rise of Coffee Shaming - Personal-finance gurus really hate coffee.

Suze Orman wants young people to stop “peeing” away millions of dollars on coffee. Last month, the personal-finance celebrity ignited a controversy on social media when a video she starred in for CNBC targeted a familiar villain: kids these days and their silly $5 lattes. Because brewing coffee at home is less expensive, Orman argued, purchasing it elsewhere is tantamount to flushing money away, which makes it a worthy symbol of Millennials’ squandered resources.

Orman’s not alone in this view. The old guard of personal finance has spent years turning the habit of buying coffee into a shorthand for Americans’ profligacy, especially that of young Americans. Dave Ramsey, a finance personality who hosts a popular radio show on getting out of debt, says that forgoing lattes is one of four keys to saving thousands of dollars. Kevin O’Leary, one of the investors on the entrepreneurial reality show Shark Tank, once told CNBC, “I never buy a frape-latte-blah-blah-blah-woof-woof-woof.” Even the official Twitter account for Chase Bank has gotten in on the fun, intimating via meme that a failure to brew at home is why young people don’t have any money.

In the face of coffee shaming, young people usually point to things like student loans and housing prices as the true source of the generation’s instability, not their $100-a-month cold-brew habits. Nonetheless, coffee endures as a personal-finance flash point because it provides such a tidy intersection of generational tensions. A cup of coffee embodies changes in everything from how younger Americans eat to where they live and how they approach their finances. For young people who buy one each morning, the walk up to the barista can be a shame-tinged tug of war.

“I never paid attention to their politics. Their coffee is good and pretty readily available.”

So, it wouldn’t bother you if a part of the money you give them went to kill babies?

Says the clown that misspells comprehension. I caught more than you did, dumbass. Just what we need, another nazi telling us about something we “don’t need”. They do that with guns, too. “Why do you need that?” None of your damn business.

Oh, she’ll complain about millennials pissing their money away on $5 lattes, but won’t address her own scamming of millions from poor and middle class people with her “Approved Debit Card” that she promised would build credit scores for the users. Not only did it NOT do that (it’s a DEBIT card), but people had to pay monthly fees for the privilege of using the card and pay fees up the wazoo for even inquiring about balances. The card shut down abruptly and people could no longer access their money, while she was on an extended Bahamas vacation. Just search YouTube for “Suze Orman scammer” and prepare to be disgusted.

I love the refillable K cups.

Burr grind just enough of really good beans, get two uses. Beans stay fresh, cheaper than heck, and no wasting coffee. And I can use a regular K cup if a guest wants something flavored without polluting the machine.

People are missing the whole point of the article. It’s not you or I, who can actually afford to go to $tarbuck$ or Big A$$ Coffee [actual name] places, but these millenials who are either in debt or going into debt getting a worthless degree in sociology studies for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

You and I spend OUR OWN monies we have earned and not plunk down a credit card once or twice a day for $10 of spicy brown sweet water...............

I work with a young lady who fits into this category. She and her live-in boyfriend make decent money, probably $100K between them, yet they live in a 500 sq. ft. apartment. She bemoans not being able to buy a house, but they’re using Grub Hub or Uber-food or other restaurant delivery to eat every night of the week. She buys her lunch every day. And she goes for coffee. She told me they probably spend around $2K a month on food. But, she blames her inability to save money on a credit card she maxed out in college and is still paying off 5 years later. I told her she’d have the down payment for a house in about 18 months, if they would start cooking at home and packing a lunch. Meanwhile, she has repeatedly commented on how good the salad I bring from home every day looks. It costs me just under $2.50 to make a huge salad that includes grilled chicken breast. She doesn’t believe me when I tell her I make my own salads because I’m lazy and cheap.
