A small glass of juice or soda a day is linked to increased risk of cancer, study finds

There's more bad news for fans of sugary drinks such as soda and fruit juice.

A new study has linked drinking just a small glass of a sugary drink per day -- 100 ml, about a third of a typical can of soda -- to an 18% increase in overall cancer risk and a 22% increase in risk for breast cancer.

The research, which looked at more than 100,000 French adults, links consumption of sugary drinks to an increased risk of some cancers. This follows a recent study linking sugary beverage consumption to greater risk of premature death.

"The results indicate statistically significant correlations between the consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks and risk of all cancers combined, and of breast cancer," said Ian Johnson, nutrition researcher and emeritus fellow, Quadram Institute Bioscience, who wasn't involved in the research.

"Surprisingly perhaps, the increased risk of cancer in heavier consumers of sugary drinks was observed even among consumers of pure fruit juice -- this warrants more research," Johnson told the Science Media Centre in the UK.

Mathilde Touvier, lead author of the study which was published Wednesday in medical journal BMJ, said that the findings added to research showing that reducing how many sweetened beverages we drink would be beneficial for our health.

"What we observed was that the main driver of the association seems to be really the sugar contained in these sugary drinks," said Touvier, who is the research director of the Nutritional Epidemiology Research Team of the National Health and Medical Research Institute at the Paris 13 University.

Touvier said her team observed that sugar seemed to be the main driver of the link.

"High sugary drinks consumption is a risk factor for obesity and weight gain," she said, and, "obesity is in itself a risk factor for cancer."

End of day almost anything we drink, eat, smell, or even look at can apparently cause cancer.

Sugar doesn’t cause cancer.. but it will feed a cancer that has already established itself.

I personally think any person who pays attention to ANY of these things you see in the media about this food or that food has to find something to do with their unused brain cells.

I ignore them wholly.

In other breaking news, a small dose of exposure to CNN’s unhinged, rampant stupidity is linked to increased risk of brain damage.

What they are saying, and it’s been a suggested health discussion for a decade...is that cancer growths are often looking for something to stimulate and assist in growing, and sugar is an active item. So folks who are consuming a six-pack of soda per day, along with a chocolate cake slice, a pile of pancakes each morning, and a apple turnover for the mid-morning....are actively helping that cancer growth cycle.

Maybe you got great genes and they counter-attack, and lessen your cancer potential. Maybe you got lousy genes and simply accelerating your potential for cancer. It’s your luck.

The hint here by the research crowd....lessen your sugar intake. Maybe one or two sodas a week are all you need, and you learn to make it with ice tea (no sugar). Maybe you curtail the chocolate cake except once a week. Maybe you increase your fruit intake by triple what you do now...for snacks.

Juices are just the flavor and liquid from the fruit, not the fiber and other benefits of eating the whole fruit.

The only source of sweetener found in nature is honey, and even that is self limiting in how much you can consume.

Everything we have as a sweetener must be refined to get it.

Our bodies just were not created to eat sugar in the amounts that juices and sweetened drinks contain and not made to have it hit our bloodstream that fast.

I get it...

The Frenchies in this study were at Parisian sidewalk cafes, drinking those tiny, sample-size bottles of Coca-Cola that they pay 15 Euros apiece for, lukewarm of course.

While going through a whole pack of dark blue Galoises.

And it is the 100 ml bottle of Coca that is killing them off.

Got it.

"...“In a study published in 2015 in The Lancet..."

Pretty much stopped reading right there. Most conservatives may remember the Lancet from the lead up to and into the Gulf War. Remember "100,000 civilian deaths"

“linked to”

~~~
Correlation is not causation
When studies find correlations, they never seem to just publish that. It seems there is always some huge leaps and inferences.
Does sugar cause cancer?
Do the subsequent insulin spikes cause cancer?
Is there another ingredient that typically accompanies a sweetened drink (such as a preservative) that causes cancer?
Are sugary drinkers more sedate and less health conscious?
...so on and so forth...
I do generally have some fruit juice at breakfast though.
