Could Massive SoCal Earthquakes Trigger the 'Big One' on the San Andreas Fault?
Live Science ^ | July 8, 2019 | Tia Ghose and Jeanna Bryner

It is theoretically possible, though there's no known link between the two fault systems, geophysicists say. And because there's still so much to learn about the complicated fault system that ruptured, it's difficult to say whether the San Andreas Fault took on additional stress from the recent quakes, they say.

The magnitude-7.1 quake on July 5 ruptured a known portion of the Little Lake Fault zone, while the magnitude-6.4 quake that hit the prior day ruptured a previously unmapped region of the fault zone, Glenn Biasi, a geophysicist with the USGS in Pasadena, California, told Live Science in an email.

"We do not know of a definite relationship of these earthquakes to the San Andreas," Biasi said.

That said, geologists are still learning a lot about the Little Lake Fault zone.

Many of the individual faults in this zone are active, "and because they are buried, we probably do not know them all. This area does not fit the textbook picture of sides of a plate sliding past one another," Biasi said.

Because these faults are so complicated and we know relatively little about them, it's hard to say how they will interact with the San Andreas. It is possible that the recent quakes added stress to the San Andreas Fault, though "we don't have a good way to assess the likelihood," said Michele Cooke, a geoscientist at the University of Massachusetts - Amherst.

"The San Andreas hasn't slipped in a long while. If the fault is loaded to the point where it is just about ready to slip, then it is possible that the recent earthquake could add just enough shear stress to the San Andreas to cause it to slip. Alternatively, the slip of these recent earthquakes could unclamp the San Andreas fault, making it easier to slip,"

The Garlock fault is closer. Just saying.

The world comes the end every day for somebody.

Repentance is always a good idea.

It’s like it’s all connected or sumpthin. Hope it doesn’t set off the Cascadia.

The only safe solution is the complete evacuation of California. To Mexico.

California to rename San Andreas Fault to Trump’s Fault.

Live usefully, walk humbly under the eyes of God, harm no one, help everyone you can and you need not worry about repentance.

Romans 3:10-20

10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:

14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:

15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:

16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:

17 And the way of peace have they not known:

18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.

19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

And Further, the Son of God, Jesus himself, commands you to repent:

Mark 1:14-15

14 Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Without repentance and believing the Gospel, you will not make heaven.

From what I remember of the maps of the west coast, it is a jumble of various smaller fault areas, where it looks like the edge of the two plates where they meet have broken off chunks all over the place, all jumbled together in a couple of areas, especially the Washington/Oregon area.

I lost track of my geology book, and haven’t found a map like it had, just the outlines of the various plates and chunks of plates. I found plenty earthquake potential maps, but nothing with drawn in outlines of the plates.

Hard to describe. but it’s a bunch of irregular shaped sections of tectonic plates, all along the northern and southern sections of the west coast. The Pacific and North American plates are the major plates and are grinding against each other, the smaller ones getting jostled around as the two bigger ones move. The Pacific plate is moving northwest, North American moving the opposite direction, and in a couple of places the Pacific is also diving underneath. All this combined creates the “Ring of Fire” giving us earthquakes and volcanoes all the way around the Pacific, which is a growing ocean.

As it pushes against North America, sliding to the northwest, it also jostles the smaller sections of plates around, causing them to create earthquakes. It sounds like this is what we got last week.

I posted this link in another thread, the recent quake was in the general area of the San Bernardino/Palmdale region. Close enough to affect the San Andreas? Probably. Thinking in geological terms, it’s about as close as your alarm clock is to your pillow. I’d say there is a very good chance a strong quake anywhere in that region could set off San Andreas.

https://geology.com/articles/san-andreas-fault.shtml

Some professionals don’t seem to agree, or maybe they don’t want to cause a panic...on both ends of the San Andreas, there are smaller chunks of plates that can move around, this is one of them. As far as I’m concerned, a strong quake anywhere in that region could set off a chain reaction, especially in the northern section near the Yellowstone Caldera. That just seems to make sense.

This map shows the major quake areas of the US, but not the actual fault boundaries.

http://strangesounds.org/2013/07/fault-lines-in-the-usa-this-map-shows-the-major-earthquake-hazard-areas-within-the-united-states.html

If you look at the Louisiana Texas border, about 1/4 inch into the blue area, that’s about where I am. The quakes on the 4th and 5th were in that red area in southern Wackifornia.

Then up north, through Oregon and Washington, is the Cascadia Subduction zone, just one of the potential trouble spots. Being pushed under the North American plate, under Mt St Helens and the Newberry volcano. Not far to the east of there is the Yellowstone Caldera, and I read an article a few months ago that they have recently found the lava pool under it is 3 times the size they originally suspected. Huge...

Altogether, it’s enough it should be of concern to anyone in the US. Some of those trouble spots can cause a disaster sufficient to result in major issues for the entire country. If anything sets off Yellowstone, or it just decides it’s time, (it’s overdue) that would create a cloud of dust and ash over 50 miles into the atmosphere capable of cutting off sunlight for years, to the entire US of A, as well as covering half the US land mass with a layer of ash 4 feet thick.

Then consider this. According to what has been documented, the sun just went into a new solar minimum phase, which is always accompanied by many years of harsh winters, and increased geological activity. I haven’t seen any conformation yet, but it seems to me we’re seeing more earthquakes lately, and a volcano or two as well. if this trend continues, the coming 30-50 years of harsh winters might not be our biggest problem...

Having walked straight across the San Andreas a few times in my life, I’ve always thought it ridiculous to build right there.

Repent what? I’ve been baptized, confirmed in the Catholic Church and never doubted Jesus Christ was the Son of God, born of the Virgin Mary. Repentance is for those who have denied Christ. I confess my sins to God and ask his forgiveness.

I used to belong to the health club in the basement of the Captain Cook Hotel in Anchorage, which is built on the San Andreas Fault. Every day I got more antsy about it and finally dropped my membership; it became too creepy.

To God, or to a Priest? There is a difference.

Did you even bother to read the scriptures I posted to you?

Repentance is for every man, woman, and child ever born, because, as the Apostle Paul correctly stated, there are none that have not sinned. If you have sinned, you are required by God to repent, no ifs, ands, or buts. Just because you are a faithful Catholic does not remove those facts.
