Sonalee Rashatwar hadnt planned on being a therapist growing up. Her career path, she explained while sitting in the waiting room of Radical Therapy Center, the practice she co-owns in West Philadelphia, just kind of happened.
Rashatwar, now 31, endured an abusive relationship in her early 20s. After college, she started volunteering for a domestic-violence response team, an experience that showed her that she enjoyed working with other people who had lived through traumas.
All of my work is to better understand what Ive experienced, said Rashatwar, who graduated from Temple University in 2011. Its almost like Im healing younger versions of myself by trying to find language to describe what happened.
As the fat-positivity movement has gained momentum, so, too, have debates around how fat folks should lead healthy lives. Rashatwar, though, considers how sizeism is affected by racism, misogyny, classism, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism, and she counsels people against intentional weight loss.

You have a special kind of poverty when obesity is a major problem among the poor.
My wife has cancer, so we have been low carb (<20g) for over a year.
We visited one of the oncologist’s P.A.s the other day, one we hadn’t met before. I told her we are doing low carb/keto.
“Oh, I’m not sure I like that. I’m diabetic and have to limit carbs to 160g/day.”
As you age, the joints that were able to support you when you were young will be prematurely worn, and you'll have knee, hip, and foot issues. You'll lose any kind of real mobility. That will lead you to put on more weight, you'll have sanitation issues...and then you'll have all the internal things going on with your body.
Obesity generally isn't natural - human bodies developed over thousands of years of having to do manual work to survive, which kept weight down. Now that we're more sedentary, you have to make a special effort to keep your weight within the limits our bodies were meant to carry.
If not...there's no "positivity" in the results.
I love it!;-)
I have posted running articles over the years and, inevitably, a "Jim Fixx" post pops up near the top.
You got to find the ones you trust.
Fat phobia can be cured by an occasional salad.
But being stupid, lazy and loudly opinionated about your insane liberal beliefs only leave certain career paths open to you.
Not crazy. Evil.
Another Marxist pervert who wants the annihilation of democracy and Christianity.
Typical Democrat.
She goes directly against doctors advise in almost all cases.
It is as if she is counseling people to not stop smoking.
She was abused so now she’s making a career out of abusing everybody else.
But its her way, which is caring donchanknow! That makes it okey doke. So just shut up, mkay?
Fat is beautiful (except for Type II diabetes, heart attack, stroke, mental anguish).
Homosexual is beautiful (except for AIDS and STDs, other nasties, mental anguish).
Tattooed and pierced is beautiful.
F bombing is beautiful.
Lying about and physically harming Republicans is beautiful.
Oh, what a beautiful America we live in today.
The fat Is tolerable. The extreme stupid idiotic is not.
Be fat if ya wanna honey, but don’t try to make yourself feel better by dismantling western civilization to make your poor self esteem the fault of others.
He, about 50 lbs over weight, said, "My bike is a Harley. That's good exercise."
I don't know why I said it (tired I guess), but I said, "yep, I saw a bunch of them back at the Waffle House between here and the bike trail."
He chuckled and said, "Yep, Waffle House is one of our favorite destinations."
Jim Fixx’s The Complete Book of Running is a great book. Some of it is outdated, but most is still pertinent.
I know Jim died in his early 50’s, but he was heavy smoker at one time and his father died in his early 40’s.
Thanks for posting your running articles. If you don’t think you can run, start walking, but keep moving.
Yeah... I had a high school teacher that was pretty heavy in the 60s. He loved to eat, and wasn’t going to stop eating or loving it, so he started jogging. He got tiny, and was constantly shuffling around town. He’s still shuffling around in the Seattle area, last I heard m
She’ll Gibbons is another favorite whipping boy of the folks that doubt the benefits of a healthy diet.
IMHO most mental health folks are crazy.
Sometimes stuff just is.
My father worshiped Jim Fixx.
Had his 1st heart attack at 57.
The on at 62 did him in.
Ran so many marathons.
So, because she’s fat, she wants civilization destroyed. She should go to a majority-muzz country and see what kind of “civilization” is ready and waiting to replace ours.
