Sonalee Rashatwar hadnt planned on being a therapist growing up. Her career path, she explained while sitting in the waiting room of Radical Therapy Center, the practice she co-owns in West Philadelphia, just kind of happened.
Rashatwar, now 31, endured an abusive relationship in her early 20s. After college, she started volunteering for a domestic-violence response team, an experience that showed her that she enjoyed working with other people who had lived through traumas.
All of my work is to better understand what Ive experienced, said Rashatwar, who graduated from Temple University in 2011. Its almost like Im healing younger versions of myself by trying to find language to describe what happened.
As the fat-positivity movement has gained momentum, so, too, have debates around how fat folks should lead healthy lives. Rashatwar, though, considers how sizeism is affected by racism, misogyny, classism, homophobia, transphobia, and ableism, and she counsels people against intentional weight loss.

Another nut.
Have someone sit next to you on a plane and flow onto your seat then tell me about “fat positive.”
But I don’t put up with it. I don;t hesitate to tell FAs that I paid for a entire seat and insist the person invading my space be reseated.
Q for these folks: Smoking’s cool, too, right...?
(crickets)
The concept of being obese and healthy is an oxymoron. Just watch my 600lb life and see what obesity does to people. In its extreme people can no longer fit through doors in their home, they need to bath in a trough because the tub is too small, the medics need to cut a hole in their wall to get them out. There ae even companies that manufacture special ambulances because the standard ones cannot fit some people.
Perhaps she should focus on freeing her fellow sister muslims rather and take out her anguish on Western civilization. Maybe lose so,e weight, too. She is dangerously unhealthy.
She is a silly leftist. If we do what she probably wants and adopt communism, there will be no overweight people outside of the ruling class. Look at Venezuela, where most people are starving while a very few plunder the country and get rich and fat.
The things people will do to avoid exercise and a healthy diet....
We have people addicted to alcohol or narcotics who will say they don’t have a problem, it’s everyone around them who has a problem.
This woman is addicted to unhealthy eating, and will develop diabetes and die early.
sounds like a nut.
Hmm. I'm not certain that living healthy is possible if one is fat. The strain on the heart alone is enough to send one to an early grave, not to mention diabetes, strain on the skeletal system, increased risk of cancer, etc.
I have struggled with weight issues for much of my life. I know how hard it is to lose weight and keep it off; I would still like to lose another 10-20 pounds, after having lost 65. I will never give up as this young woman advises people to do; giving up on maintaining a healthy weight leads to giving up on other worthy goals, IMO. It means adopting the attitude of a failure who gives up easily.
If the local south-o-the -border types are any indication, the American lifestyle is gonna produce a lot of 5 foot tall 300 pounders. Not a pretty picture.
The great majority of cultures everwhere recognize human obesity as the result of greedy self-indulgence. You can kill Western Civilization all you want, but lard-asses will always wear their weakness of character on their waists, hips, and fannies...and be subject to well-deserved ridicule.
As a general rule her health care costs will be more compared to a person who is not overweight, eats properly and exercises.
You mean the people living in poverty and do not know when there next meal is going to be?
Dont like Western Civ? Im cool with that, Sonalee, as long as you quit appropriating my culture. You must give up air conditioning, central station electric power, the crapper, modern medicine, tons of other stuff, basically the modern world.
Enjoy your hovel.
The husband has had three heart attacks and struggles to move about.
She said that for years she has had him on a low fat diet (as in "all you can eat" low fat diet).
I suggested that she look into "low carb" or even perhaps "keto" diet. They are working for a lot of people.
She looked at me with her most serious nurse face (she's a nurse, after all) and said, "I don't know...I'm not sure those diets are healthy."
Being skinny in worse than being fat.
Go make me some pancakes woman!
