In a study using brain tissue from deceased human donors, Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers say they found new evidence that schizophrenia can be marked by the buildup of abnormal proteins similar to those found in the brains of people with such neurodegenerative disorders as Alzheimer's or Huntington's diseases.
Rather than rely on categorizing by symptoms, researchers have long sought to better classify types of schizophrenia -- such as those in which abnormal proteins appear to accumulate -- as a potential way to improve and tailor therapies as precision medicine. The researchers aren't sure how common this variation of the disorder is, although they did find it in about half of the brain samples analyzed.
Nucifora says this main finding of the abnormal proteins involved in these processes is consistent with theories of schizophrenia that trace its origins to brain development and to problems with neural communication.
"Researchers have been so focused on the genetics of schizophrenia that they've not paid as much attention to what is going on at the protein level and especially the possibility of protein aggregation," says Nucifora. "This may be a whole new way to look at the disorder and develop more effective therapies."

“The researchers aren’t sure how common this variation of the disorder is, although they did find it in about half of the brain samples analyzed.”
So did they need a slice of the patients brain to make the diagnosis?
There’s some things you can’t find out by means of MRI and CAT scans, I’m afraid.
What we need in medicine is a robust merging of respect for
1) The spiritual nature of man that we are not just body and ‘brain’ as it were, but SOUL.
2) The neurological and chemical workings of the brain to better treat psychiatric realities.
3) The impact of personal life trauma and environmental factors in a person’s life, and how this is manifested in the brain. Especially in youth!
Yes, from cadavers.
Another area of research that is interesting to me are diet and lifestyle factors’ impact on mental health. I highly doubt a poor diet/sedentary lifestyle could CAUSE mental illness, but it may exacerbate it!
We all know the obvious impact drugs and alcohol can have on the brain...but examining the impact of ‘regular’ food and drinks is worth a look! I’m sure certain ‘all natural’ products people utilize for better health, might have some unintentional bad side effects too — as plants are quite potent!
The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, has started an initiative to encourage more outdoor activity and camraderie among British youth.
Schizophrenia = marijuana
Brain plaque reduced with statins.
Sad that we’ll have to wait that long to get a look at Maxine Waters, AOC and other assorted psycho dems.
Agree 100% with your suggestions.
The Link Between Marijuana and Schizophrenia(excerpt)
But here's the conundrum: while marijuana went from being a secret shared by a small community of hepcats and beatniks in the 1940s and '50s to a rite of passage for some 70% of youth by the turn of the century, rates of schizophrenia in the U.S. have remained flat, or possibly declined. For as long as it has been tracked, schizophrenia has been found to affect about 1% of the population.
Marijuana does accelerate schizophrenia in those so predisposed.
I’ve attended psychiatric conferences where they presented many case studies showing how first time use, especially with synthetic THC like JWH-18 caused psychotic breaks that were permanent for life.
I would classify the author’s statement as opinion and not fact.
A statistic is either a fact or a falsehood it can’t be an opinion.
Back in the ‘eighties a friend of mine who I got my chemistry degree with was working on a project of analyzing dialysate from schizophrenics.
Turns out when you put some schizophrenics on dialysis within a couple of weeks they are no longer schizophrenic.
Wish I knew how the research turned out.
Thanks for posting this. I have a personal stake, and it matters, a lot.
I know of 2 people that went from normal to crazy in 6 month using synthetic marijuana. Sad.
Yes. It’s after they’ve died.
“Brain plaque reduced with statins.”
I never heard that.
I believe it
But then i dont believe it
For this study, the patients were dead, so they weren't likely to object.
