Antibiotics weaken flu defenses in the lung

Antibiotics can leave the lung vulnerable to flu viruses, leading to significantly worse infections and symptoms, finds a new study.

The research discovered that signals from gut bacteria help to maintain a first line of defence in the lining of the lung. When mice with healthy gut bacteria were infected with the flu, around 80% of them survived. However, only a third survived if they were given antibiotics before being infected.

"We found that antibiotics can wipe out early flu resistance, adding further evidence that they should not be taken or prescribed lightly," explains Dr Andreas Wack. "Inappropriate use not only promotes antibiotic resistance and kills helpful gut bacteria, but may also leave us more vulnerable to viruses. This could be relevant not only in humans but also livestock animals. Further research in these environments is urgently needed to see whether this makes them more susceptible to viral infections."

"We were surprised to discover that the cells lining the lung, rather than immune cells, were responsible for early flu resistance induced by microbiota," says Andreas. "Previous studies have focused on immune cells, but we found that the lining cells are more important for the crucial early stages of infection. They are the only place that the virus can multiply, so they are the key battleground in the fight against flu. Gut bacteria send a signal that keeps the cells lining the lung prepared, preventing the virus from multiplying so quickly.

"It takes around two days for immune cells to mount a response, in which time the virus is multiplying in the lung lining. Two days after infection, antibiotic-treated mice had five times more virus in their lungs. To face this bigger threat, the immune response is much stronger and more damaging, leading to more severe symptoms and worse outcomes."

Get Tamiflu at the first sign of the flu. If you get a seeming secondary infection and another prescription, reconsider getting it filled out, appears to be what this study says. Definitely don’t accept an antibiotic prescription for a viral infection without bacterial signs.

I just can’t believe this.

I always found that antibiotics work.

While in general they say that antibiotics don’t kill viruses, some of them do, it says right on the drug description brochure.

And, as I said, in my personal experience they kill all the bad stuff, including viruses.

I think it is more dangerous to NOT take antibiotics, “because it’s a virus”, then wind up with a severe bacterial infection.

Wrong conclusion.

Better conclusion: keep a good biome of bacteria in your gut, take serious probiotics from time to time, and eat fermented food and drink almost every day. And avoid an excess of carbs and sugars. Healthy gut bacteria are the ones who make you crave resistant starches like cooked root veggies or rice.

It wont kill viruses.

The bactria infections are secondary and take advantage of the virus there already weakening the immune system.

The antibiotics wipe out the bacteria infection freeing up the immune system to ramp up and deal with the virus.

You are still infected and it will last 1 - 1.5 days less.

HOWEVER, your symptoms start reversing a day after starting Tamiflu, meaning you feel a lot better, many days earlier than without it.

It may be the overuse of antibiotics.

Here is a little bit about Ceclor:

https://www.drugs.com/pro/cefaclor.html#s-34067-9

“Note:lactamase-negative, ampicillin-resistant (BLNAR) strains of Haemophilus influenzae should be considered resistant to Cefaclor despite apparent in vitro susceptibility of some BLNAR strains.”

There are others, but I don’t have the internet addresses for them, but it said in the package insert that you get with prescription medication and I always read it.

But here is one example for you, it’s not supposed to work against influenza, but it does.

But always consult with your doctor, read the package insert, and make up your own mind.

I just shared my experiences and opinion.

Haemophilus influenzae is a bacteria not the flu virus.

Antibiotics don’t touch viruses and they kill off good stuff along with the bad stuff.
Like most medicines, antibiotics have their place but too many find them “convenient” for anything that ails them and it leads to a lot of other problems, not to mention resistant strains of bacteria...
