Weekly Gardening Thread July 6-12, 2019
June 5, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 07/05/2019 3:24:11 PM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Very interesting thanks for posting. I have lots of very old jars and use them all even the blue ones. I saved that chart. Here's one of our sunflowers that has a bloom already. From a dropped seed from the feeder. We always have some. Just took it. Cooler today thankfully and a breeze.

Nice, do you use a dehydrator. Are the peppers hot? We love smoked sweet paprika.

Hailstorms came through Denver this past week, and shredded everything, stripped twigs and leaves from trees, and gave us enough hail that it froze some tender seedlings. Containers on the balcony that couldnt be moved didn’t get covered in time got blasted. Some hailstones were the size of quarters. :o((

Try imgur.com

A key plus with regard to posting images on FR is that you can choose to keep them private, unseen by the general imgur crowd of the progressive ilk who tend to cause problems. That still allows you to post direct image links on FR which all can see.

You can also create albums...with labels etc.

I’ve used the private setting for several and years now and have had no harassment problems.
...and many have views of 4k and more

Yes, a dehydrator with five plastic screens where hot air is allowed to circulate.
One of these layers take a bit over a full day to dry.

Then, into the electric coffee bean grinder to pulverize into powder.
Wal Mart sells glass salt and pepper shakers for $2. I label the products and year it was grown and processed.

I should add, home-made paprika is stronger and sweeter than the tin canned “Hungarian” variety.

Powder we made three years ago, stored in a sealed jar is still potent.

Came across a few photos from LAST season (2018)to share. First up is 'Soroya' Sunflower.

'Still Life with Sweet Corn and Afternoon Sun'

We live in the part of Wisconsin that is called, 'The Driftless Area' which means that the Glaciers missed us and left our land VERY hilly. We need to plant crops in 'contour strips' to help stop erosion. It's really quite lovely.

Sometimes I sit on my front porch and squint a little and pretend that I manage a HUGE Vineyard in Tuscany, with row upon row of fabulous grapes as far as the eye can see. But then I sober up and remember that we're only growing soybeans, LOL!

I always leave a few sunflowers to grow around the feeder, too! Free food! :)

We're also growing some Rezha Macedonian peppers to dry and grind.
Hot but more subtle than the paprika...

I believe it. Someone gave us a packet of paprika when they went to Hungary. It was pretty bad. We buy the smoked sweet in one pound bags online. It is wonderful. We use a lot when we make capicola. The whole 6-7 pound pork neck gets rolled in it.
