Hes still best known for giving bad taste a good name through his film work, including such movies as the Trash Trilogy (Pink Flamingos, Female Trouble, and Desperate Living) and his biggest commercial hit, 1988s PG-rated Hairspray.
I dont think Im ever mean. Thats the main thing. I make fun of things I like, while most people make fun of things they dont like. That, in some way, is why I have been able to have this career for 50 years. Even in the book, I dont mention any of the studio executives or anything that gave me trouble or I disagreed with. I never mentioned a name because I cashed the check
Have you ever done drag? I was only in drag once, and that was as the Wicked Witch at a birthday party when I was 8 years old. That ended my drag career. You have to be so careful of what you say. My friend told me this story, You know, every gay man once tried on their mothers shoes. You did it once; you never did it again. But now, if you have a very liberal mother and they catch you, you have sexual reassignment lessons at 8 years old. And you might not really wanna do that.
I dont think that would happen. Well, people have babies. Thats why Trump will win. Because of things like babies, where you dont tell your child what sex they are until they figure it out themselves when theyre 3 years old, and then you give em a party and say, Youre a girl. These children will be in mental institutions. Your parents are supposed to tell you what to do. Then later, if you disagree, you rebel and do the opposite. I think thats a healthy lifestyle.

Something to offend everyone?
Do you think Trump has become successful in part because he deployed similar tactics of shock and attention grabbing as you did? When I was on Bill Maher with Andrew Breitbart, [Breitbart] said to me, I do the same thing you do; were just on different sides. Which is true. So I get why Trump supporters like [Trump], because he is doing what he said he was going to do and we hate him so much he makes us crazy.
Always an interesting fellow. Smart guy, easy to underestimate because he is out-of-the-mainstream in certain ways. But he understands things better than a lot of people.
That was actually a very well done interview.
The reporter asked some good questions, not just ‘gotcha’ questions, meant to startle or trap.
It helps if you already know who John Waters is, but that’s not difficult to Google if one is truly interested.
I read this early this morning. Made me quite nostalgic for good friends and good times long gone from my life.
He may come out against Trump, but I know he at least understands.
I count those movies as “Among the many films my parents would never know that I’d seen and laughed at”.
He certainly is a character!
John Waters is my #1 guilty pleasure.
Excellent interview.
I’ve never really liked his movies. Serial Mom is OK but mostly his stuff is crap. But he’s a lot of fun to listen to talk.
Years ago, I stopped by my parents. They were having a grand old time watching “Pecker”.
Couldn’t believe it.
I doubt that they got the intended ridicule, and simply enjoyed the situational comedy.

same
Ever see his appearance on “The Culinary Adventures of Baron Ambrosia”?
Some people can miss almost all of the double entendres, puns and parodies, and still enjoy a performance. They are often much better off not knowing what’s being overlooked.
Some people will fool themselves that they ‘didn’t know’ what a scene was really about. They are not ready to admit it, and may never be ready.
Nope, never heard of the show until now. Bet it’s a blast though.
Is there a Democratic primary candidate you support?
Heres what I think: [Trump] is gonna win again, because I say it myself and they all go Ahhh! when I say that. And I say, Who are you gonna vote for? Silence. There are 40 characters that are going to divide it all up. You know, the gay one I like. Id vote for any of them, even though it would be really hard for me to vote for Elizabeth Warren who has never once said a funny thing in her entire life.
She is the best one, I would argue.
I think she will lose. Any of the ones that have already been out there will lose, big time. And any of the ones that try to be super left wing will really lose, too. And all the other ones just havent been around. I dont know. Im very much against Kamala [Harris] because she is a prisoners enemy. She made it so that you couldnt get parole for ten years instead of five in California. She did a lot of things that are against prisoners rights, so Im definitely against her. Whats the one, Mayor Pete? Is he the gay one?
Buttigieg, yeah.
To me it better be somebody young and somebody new. Who knows! Its a civil war, and I believe that it could be decided by one vote. Its split right down the middle. Its just exhausting to me.
But I get why they like [Trump], because he infuriates us. And its everything he said he was gonna do. So hes not lying to them. We were just too stupid and sat home and didnt vote. Because the Democrats so thats what you get.
Although to be fair, Hillary Clinton did win the popular vote.
Yeah, but thats not the way it works. If we won and he won the popular vote, we wouldnt have said that. Theyre always gonna say that. Well, then change it! But until they do, thats the way it works. Look, I voted for Hillary. I like Hillary. Shed lose. Theyd all lose. Amy Carter has a better chance.
Sounds like a “closet” Trump fan.
That was the hook that pulled me in, to post the interview.
A question for Mr. Bob?
Something is very wrong here.
I fully expected many negative comments for posting about an over the hill gay lefty that loves Baltimore???
Do you think I should page Humblegunner to explain the evil of wasting photons by blog pumping?
Sounds like a closet Trump fan.
Not sure if I’d go that far?
IIRC Ted Rall( WAY LEFT) had an article in the WSJ recently mapping a similar position.
It was a brief, thankfully, scripted t-i-c series on the Food Channel or Network or whatever it was called. Picked up off of NYC local access channel.
I might have seen the first two epis before giving up on it, except for the Baltimore epi, and JW joining them in the latter part of the show.
It’s safer for him to criticize the Man/Trump than to have to tour the country making excuses for Elizabeth Warren. He’d get blacklisted if he expressed displessure with an elected Democrat these days.
I read a book by him decades ago. I forget the name.
It was hilarious.
