Tyler Skaggs, Los Angeles Angels pitcher, passed away this morning, the team announced. Skaggs was in Texas, where the Angels were scheduled to begin their four game series against the Texas Rangers today. Tonights game between the Rangers and Angels has been canceled.
This is tragic news for the Angels and the MLB community. Skaggs, 27, was a Southern California native who was born in Woodland Hills and graduated from Santa Monica High School. He was originally drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, but returned home to the Angels in a trade in the 2013-14 offseason. He has spent parts of the last four seasons in the Angels rotation, including making 15 starts this year for the Angels.
Our thoughts go out to the Angels baseball family.
Correction: He made a tweet a few hours ago.
????????......................
Was it dark or rambling?
Actually pitched on Saturday, but close enough... just got married over the last off season. No word about an accident, injury (doubtful), or disease... that doesn’t leave very many possible conclusions, and nobody’s talking about any details yet.
Not at all. He said Howdy yall with a smiley and a #Texasroadtrip hashtag. He had a bad start yesterday but has apparently had a good month.
Weird...
Thanks. I was confused because the news hadnt hit yet and the story that came up was a day old talking about his start the night before.
Yeah... that tweet was 19 hours ago, and was apparently found dead this morning. Oddly tragic and bizarre.
In 2002 Cardinals pitcher Darryl Kile passed this same way. He died of a heart attack in his sleep. Albert Pujols was on that team also.
For a male at that age, it’s usually suicide, O.D., or foul play.
No worries....either way, it wasn’t like he was despondent over being demoted or anything like that (c.f.: Tommy Hanson)... he’s made 15 starts as a full-on member of the Angels rotation and had just arrived in Texas with the team.
He had a heart attack at 33.
I'll guess that Skaggs had a congenital heart defect or used some kind of illicit substance.
27 is very young to die from coronary artery disease.

Oh no. RIP. Awful/
Chuck Hughes of the Detroit Lions dropped dead on the field during a game back in 1971.
My cousin was 32 when she died in her sleep from an undetected heart defect. Never a symptom.
It must be pretty rare. A search of players who died on the field comes up with players who died while still active. I know only one person died from getting HBP.
A few soccer players have died on the pitch.
