Japan has unveiled what is very likely the design for its next-generation attack submarine. The 29SS submarines would replace the existing Sōryū class submarines starting in the early 2030s. The futuristic undersea warship will ensure that Tokyo retains its reputation for the quietest, most modern non-nuclear submarines in the world.

Today’s Japanese Navy is much more powerful than the British Royal Navy with the exception of not having strategic nuclear missiles available.
Being Japan, if they decide they must, a Lexus quality system would quickly come online. The blueprints and fuels are probably already on standby.
I believe, but have no evidence to prove, that Japan is a week or two away from having operable nuclear (not thermonuclear) weapons. It’s just a matter of assembling parts.
You can hear Chinese subs from 100 miles away.
You cannot hear a Japanese sub when it’s right next to you.
China would have a hard time defeating the Japanese Navy, much less when augmented by the US 7th Fleet.

In the early 90’s I used to go down to Yokuska Naval Base where the Blue Ridge was the command ship for the fleet, iand wonder if it is still the same? The point being is that the there were two ugly subs, probably Japanese training subs that always sat near the entrance.
Loved Japan and the people. I retired out the Army at Camp Zama in 94. The base was pretty amazing and the fleet was something to see in port back then.
