Donald Trump: Neil Young Is 'Total Hypocrite' on Song (4 years ago today in Trumpland)

The rift between billionaire real estate developer and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and Canadian rocker Neil Young might be getting bigger than the rift between Young and Lynyrd Skynyrd (which might not have been real anyway.)

Trump used Young's "Rockin' In the Free World" at his 2016-run announcement on June 16, and Young immediately issued a statement saying that Trump had not been authorized to use the song. Trump said he did license the song through ASCAP.

Strawberry Alarm Clock had actually toured with Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Lynyrd Skynyrd was their opening band on tour.

In 1970 the band appeared in the Russ Meyer cult classic film Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. By this time the band's popularity had waned considerably, but the band continued on for some time, touring the South in 1970 and 1971 with a then-unknown Florida band called Lynyrd Skynyrd opening for them.

I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd as the opening band for The Who on their Quadrophenia tour in 1973. We almost didn't want The Who to come on after them. Went out to the record store the next day to buy Lynyrd Skynyrd. They said who? They were a pretty solid record store too I might add. I told them to research and let me know when they get their album in. 8>)

I wore out my copy of Live Rust. I totally loved that album. Cortez the Killer, Sedan Delivery, and Like a Hurricane were part of my 1979-1980 life soundtrack.

People are freaking out over polls etc. now in 2019. This type of article provide a backtest of how (ir)relevant events and happenings today, will be for the election.

I believe on the liner notes to One More From the Road, a show on that tour was mentioned where Pete Townshend stopped in mid-conversation during Skynyrd's set and said "They're quite good, aren't they?"

Btw I am envious that you saw The Ooo in 1973 with Moonie.

Cortex the Killer is a great song - and now, knowing more of the history of the Aztecs, I say RIGHT ON CORTEZ! The Aztecs deserved being killed.

Trump has a history of raking opponents over the coals on the social networking site, though he told Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity recently that he would drop the Twitter battles if he makes it into the White House.

Is this an impeachable offense? / sarc

It was an awesome concert, but Lynyrd Skynyrd was far more interesting to me that night. Perhaps the songs in Quadrophenia just didn’t remind me of The Who music I loved. I mean it was okay but nothing really stuck out for me when they played. Not really sure, perhaps it was just the newness of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and them being an American band. 8>)

Neil young is a bitter old man. I’m a huge Neil young fan from way back. All he seems to care about these days is the environment and big evil corporations etc. His music was so lyrical. Oh, well.

“Rockin’ In the Free World”, like “Southern Man” and other Young’s songs is a slam on the USA. Like Springsteen’s “Born in the USA”, it’s an anti-USA song that most folks think is patriotic. Maybe Trump picked it due to it’s digs at GHW Bush.

The same goes for "American Woman" by the Guess Who. When it reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, I couldn't believe it. I figured that those who bought it were anti-Vietnam War protesters who agreed with its anti-Americanism as well as others who mistakenly thought it was patriotic.

Neil Young is a foreigner. He has no business meddling in American politics. The dims should be all over that.

When the 60s psychedelic rock group (Strawberry Alarm Clock) broke-up, their lead guitarist Ed King joined Lynyrd Skynyrd.

'Saw them (Strawberry Alarm Clock) perform at a record store opening in '67 ... didn't know one of the band (King) became so key to Lynyrd Skynyrd. Interesting guy.

I’ve been listening to that one forever. Then I found their second album on YouTube.

This post made me curious, maybe somebody with a lot better connection than I have can double check this.

I’m pretty sure when I watched Trump’s announcement speech a few days ago, when he announced he was running again, I’m sure I heard the exact same song, “Rockin in the Free World”, in the background while they were waiting for everything to get cranked up. I thought about Young throwing a fit the first time and wondered what Trump thinks he’s doing...or maybe he worked out a deal...???

I can’t remember the guy’s name, one of the Fox outside reporters they use almost daily, was there, you could see the crowd behind him and hear the venue PA in the background, and I’m sure I heard that song, specifically the section just before and during the lead guitar part.

I remember the stink about it back then but not much detail. At least Steven Tyler of Aerosmith was decent enough to talk to Trump like an adult and make a reasonable request, Trump acknowledged that it was handled without animosity too. Neil Young didn’t have that much sense, he just threw a juvenile tantrum.

Later on CSN&Y all considered getting back together and touring again just to oppose Trump...Never happened, probably because they couldn’t get along. I can’t remember which one, I think Crosby, was basically being an asshole to a couple of the others and they all said forget it, not worth putting up with the headache.

Neil Young’s singing sounds like someone is squeezing his nuts intermittently through the whole song.

Well he is Canadian so we have to give him a little leeway. Not to mention his brain is a bit fried from heroin.

Definitely a talented musician.
