Americans speak a ton of languages, and this map shows which languages other than English and Spanish are the most common in each state and Washington, D.C.

The US Census Bureau's American Community Survey annually asks more than 1 million Americans questions about their lives, families, and backgrounds. One question asks respondents what language they mainly speak in their homes.

Using individual-level responses from the 2017 American Community Survey assembled and published by the Minnesota Population Center's Integrated Public Use Microdata Series program, we found the most common language spoken at home in each state, excluding English and Spanish.

Not one State that speaks ebonics is hard to believe.

Vietnamese must be a very close second to Tagalog in California.

Interesting, but not terribly meaningful without percentages. For example, Somali has transformed Minnesota, particularly the Twin Cities, and mostly for the worst. But I'm not aware that Chinese is widely spoken in Utah, anywhere.

Pennsylvania Dutch is widespread here in the Amish and Mennonite communities, but virtually all of them speak English as well.

I am a prep school science retired teacher who tutors GED students in TX.

Boy what a difference there is across cultures.

Muslim and Latin men will not take instruction from a woman. Muslim women treat you like a “dimmi”.

Asian men and women, on the other hand, work their backsides off and will take instructions from anyone who knows their stuff.
