Citizens on Patrol: What if Your Neighbor Could Give You a Parking Ticket?
NY Times ^ | 6/20/2019 | Adeel Hassan

Few jobs are more thankless, or invite more cursing and murderous glares on any given workday, than that of a parking enforcement officer. But Washington, D.C., wants to find 80 residents to do the job for nothing.

Such is the level of frustration over the traffic and road-safety problems in the nation’s capital that a package of proposals under review by the District of Columbia Council includes enlisting private citizens to help enforce parking laws.

At the moment, the plan is just a single line in a 19-page bill that was introduced last month. The traffic bill is mostly about things like installing all-way stops at intersections and reducing the speed limit on most side streets to 20 or 25 miles an hour. But none of that has attracted nearly as much attention as the resident enforcement plan, which has conjured visions of a swift comeuppance for scofflaws idling in bike lanes while also raising alarms about the potential for abuse.

“We wanted to look creatively at what could be done here,” said Councilman Charles Allen, who introduced the bill.

If the plan is adopted, 80 residents would be trained to use their cellphones to snap photographs of vehicles parked illegally in crosswalks, bicycle lanes, fire lanes, bus stops and the like. They would then use a special app to submit the images, which would be time-stamped and geotagged, for review by a city employee.

“We wanted to look creatively at what could be done here,”

Sure, what could go wrong?

They'll get 80 cop-wannabes probably in the first hour. I hope they have paid up Obamacare. They will need it.

That is exactly what my wife said when I asked her what she thought of this.

“What could go wrong?”

What the difference between this and suburban HOA’s run by clipboard carrying NAZI’s who don’t like the color of the flowers you plant beside the door?

Maybe I'll walk the streets of Georgetown...at 2PM...wearing my “Make America Great Again” t-shirt. Ten bucks says that I'll be “arrested” within ten minutes.

Most of the 535 DC ‘critters need to be given daily parking tickets for occupying spaces while doing nothing.

Its what the DC government is most efficient at! They couldn’t run their own lottery and make a profit but they could always enforce parking with a seriousness and efficiency well beyond their peer cities.

My wife and several other insurgents got themselves elected to the HOA. They dropped fees to $0 and scheduled the next meeting 50 years out. The NAZIs got snookered and we essentially no longer have one and there is nothing they can do about it.

Government people like this idea because it gets neighbors angry at other neighbors rather than government people.

Yup...we had a guy at a condo where we lived who wanted to mandate the color of planters...ironically his last name was Limbaugh...we removed him from the Board for other antics he pulled.

When I lived in Florida they had “Citizen Patrols” and they would drive around town and if they saw what looked like a new shed or a new fence they would call it in to find out if they had a permit and I suppose the city would issue a big fine if the owner didn’t have the proper permit.
