Our 'Greeneyes' has been FOUND, but she is STILL having computer issues, so I have been asked to keep the Weekly Garden Thread rolling until she returns.
That said, I will be posting once a week, and I will TRY to stick to her schedule of a Friday Night/Saturday Morning Weekly Post.
The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Poppers! My mouth is WATERING! :)
I’ve never done anything but plant my Cukes and STAND BACK! It never occurred to me to neuter them. ;)
Glad you liked the recipe, Di.
Grilled Stuffed Peppers
Boil yellow/red bell pepper halves in water 2 min. Drain cut side down on p/towels.
Fill w/ 2 tbl combined 2 oz ea soft chevre cheese , shredded pepper Jack, 2 tb ea snipped fresh chives/fresh basil.
Can do ahead to here. Then wrap in dbled foil; grill tender-crisp 5-6 min (cheese melts).
CHEF'S TIP Cut each half in 2 wedges to make finger food. SERVE warm.
Someone online said the male cukes are bitter.....I have no idea if that is true.
Grrrr.....I reaaaaaaaalllly do not want to use Facebook. I have a profile but never use it.
Miss Marmelstein, you moved from our beloved NYC to Alabama?!
I can’t imagine a more drastic contrast between cultures!
Even my girlfriend’s move from Italian Bay Ridge to rural, redneck Oregon isn’t aigret as the leap from The Big Apple to ‘bama!
From Feast Of Santa Rosalia to BBQ at a juke joint, from Hamilton! on B’dway to Nutcracker Suite at the local high school and Gino’s to Cracker Barrel.
I’m amazed, how did this take place?
Thanks!
Ed
P.S.By the way, I totally understand, our communist lesbian Governor is destroying Oregon and I’d love to move to a conservative state like Idaho or Alabama.
We’ve got the best Mirabella Plum crop we’ve had for many, many years here is SW Oregon.
Hundreds of plums, just waiting to ripen.
My lettuce, basil and chard have all bolted, darn it, and my maters are all growing but not a single one blushing yet.
My sugar snap peas have all gone to pods and my ‘loupes and honeydews are spreading everywhere with tons of blossoms.
It seems like its going to be a good harvests season.
Ed
They stopped eating their young in Alabama, so you don’t have to worry about THAT anymore.
Where I live is gorgeous, full of crape myrtles in bloom along with magnolias and live oaks with sweeping Spanish moss. The people are lovely; there truly is a thing called southern hospitality. We are allowed to have chickens in our backyard here so I’m thinking of buying that Rhode Island Red I see wandering around the hardware store.
I never saw Hamilton so I don’t feel I’m missing anything. And I wouldn’t step foot in a Cracker Barrel when we have so many places in this city that serve real soul food and southern staples in a down home style that can truly be described using the word “rustic”.
But we have a beautiful, revitalized downtown situated on a bend in the river where you can get decent Italian food, good pizza and gyros. We are on the Civil Rights trail so we have lots of museums, 1 art museum and 1 literary outposting dedicated to a famed writer. I volunteer in several of these museums.
I love NYC and will return for visits because my family lives there. But I’m perfectly happy in a state that just outlawed abortion. The governor lives about 4 blocks from my house.
That could be true about the cukes if you’re using older heirloom varieties. My two favorites are ‘Diva’ and ‘Summer Dance’ and they only produce female flowers and are self pollinating, so no bitterness. They call it, ‘gynoecious, parthenocarphic.’
Sister cukes are doin’ it for themselves, LOL!

FYI. If you’re unfamiliar, this is a great site if you can’t decide which variety of what to grow each season. All America Select Winners truly ARE that good; I’ve grown many of them through the years with fantastic results!

I’ve grown the ‘summer dance’ cucumbers before. They were delicious. And prolific. And longer lived than most I’ve grown before.
yummy, one of my favorite appetizers

Alabama is starting to look really good. An older guy stopped at my barn sale last week and went on and on about Gulf Shores, Alabama. He and his wife winter there - cheap. I went online and looked around, many nice looking rentals for about half the price of Florida, and most right on the beach.
Yes, Fairhope and Mobile. We haven’t explored those places yet and, for some reason, most of my neighbors seem to love Destin, Florida for a vacation. We’re going to Nola for ours in December.
AL has very low to no property taxes and homes are pretty inexpensive but well-built. So it’s good for retired homeowners. Gas and electric are quite expensive since you have to have the A/C on all spring & summer. The best thing is that no liberal wants to live in such a “backward” place, lol!
Thanks or the info. It sounds good I’d love to try a month down there in the dead of winter up here (Michigan). Winters here are getting harder and harder as we age. Lots of snowbirds here that head south. I am pretty focused on Gulf Shores right now. Being on the water would be great.
Good information.....thanks!
I am trying to make garden and greenhouse as low maintenance as possible (I know..... right?!)
If I could leave for a week and return and everything was fine when I returned...that would be great.
Btw......great pun at the end if your comment ;)
Which do you prefer....the top or bottom halves? ;)
