FULL TITLE: Kindergarten teacher pens shocking viral post about why she quit her job, slamming parents whose unruly kids 'throw tantrums' and 'flip tables' because they aren't taught to behave or ever 'told no' at home
A former teacher has revealed the various reasons she decided to quit her job as a kindergarten teacher in a Facebook post.
Jessica Gentry, 34, from Harrisonburg, Virginia, took to Facebook on Thursday, June 13, to reveal the reason she quit her job at Stone Spring Elementary School after 12 years of teaching.
The mother-of-one listed a number of reasons that drove her to quit her job, including having a lack of support from children's parents, an emphasis being placed on using technology to teach, and the overall feeling that 'kids deserve better'.

No transgender ism. One boy dresses like a girl. No one cares.

Your perception is skewed.
this is transgenderism.
She still has some personal work to do in her own home life. There was a picture of her and her “partner” not her husband. Why aren’t they married if they love each other and their child so much? What is restricting this basic commitment till death do us part?
Many of the kids she is complaining about come from homes where there is either no dad or a man lives with the child and mother but isn’t the dad. I will bet the ranch that these problem parents and children have no relationship with a church. She probably doesn’t either. Hard to go to church when one is “shaking up.”
It’s amazing to me how many folks today are probably shocked at this Teachers attitude, us geezers knew all along the kids today are lacking discipline at home.
Not all, but mostly. I think the demographics of my town are like half white, maybe 30% Asian, 15% Hispanic, 5% black/other.
What was the class size? Kindergarten? If she can’t control a few 5 year old children, teaching isn’t her calling as a profession.
Ironically I spent 28 years in prison, as an employee.
I wish she’d have stayed and bucked the system by sending the little dears out of her room - calling the parents and telling them why - made the administration back her up - getting fired and suing the school district for firing her for telling the truth. To many teachers/cops burn out because of being forced to bow to political correctness.
Now following the ‘broken windows’ method should start at
the demand for respect at the early years. Spare the rod and you get what you settle for, IMO.
Watch cult film “Idiocracy”.
“Speaking truth ....good for her!”
Speaking truth to youth!
As a teacher, she should have known that going in what it would be like. I’d still like to know her class size.
And NEVER SPANKED either.
Telling a young child, "No," is sometimes like trying to reason with a stone. I have a nephew by adoption. He bit me when he was four years old. I smacked him and his mother got mad at (Wait for it.) ME. Now he's in his mid 20s and a complete basket case. Didn't finish high school. Only leaves his room for bathroom activities. He eats in his room. He plays the latest computer games in his room, all supplied by guess who. (Very sad, because I never thought of the kid as a dummy.)

Sounds like a typical Dr Phil show. I wish they would report back on the success of the ‘rehab’ money they spend on people. My guess is that fewer than half of them come out any better.
At birth, infants are already very smart. They have a basic instinct to cry when they are in discomfort. God and nature has provided them with a cry that goes right to the spine of their parents and elicits an immediate response to meet the infants need. If a low level cry of discomfort does not do the trick; they learn that raising the bar, WILL do the trick.
As the child becomes more aware of the world around them, he quickly learns that the same behavior that gives him comfort can also now be used to fulfill their worldly desires and whims, and to control the behavior of others, siblings and parents. Unchecked, this is now a problem in self-will running amuck. This is a child not an infant.
To live in the exciting broader and more complex world, it is necessary that a child be taught that their existence is no longer, just about them. There are other people and things in the world that require their attention and respect. They must also learn that there will always be some authority over them. It may be a parent, a peer, a teacher, a boss, the police, a judge or a jailer (or even a hot potbelly stove). But ultimately a childs best opportunity is to recognize that there is a loving God, to whom he is willing to give authority, over him.
The easiest solution is to train the child (still very smart) that the behavior that previously brought comfort and their fondest desires, can now also bring pain in some circumstances. Children do not understand the psychological, emotional or spiritual world (that will come later in life). They only understand the physical world. They very quickly learn that crying (and other mock signals of their own distress), will be comforted in some circumstances or will be punished in others. Again, theyre smart and will modify their behavior to get comfort when needed but also avoid pain. The pain referred to here is a spank on the butt. Applied consistently, it works. But, it also needs to be followed immediately by parental acceptance and comfort. A spanking is NOT applied for kids being kids, but for willful defiance.
Is there an alternative? Sure. You can exasperate your two year old child with long discussions of the global socio-economic eschatological implication of their behavior, while they continue to raise the bar because they know better than you. You can try to distract you child with a more enticing thing than they are asking for. What can go wrong with that? Oh, how about asking them if they want a spanking? (In my kids case, the question never got asked because it was already too late.) How about counting? At best, the kid continues until your done counting then stops, at worst he knows nothing is going to happen and continues anyway. Or the worst of all, you can decide that children are too hard to raise and just give up, turning them over to themselves. The problem with all of these is that the child does not have to recognize any authority in their life other than themselves. Parents that engage in these tactics only reinforce the notion that the child is in charge and needs answer to no authority. Eventually, authority will crush them, either physically or in spirit. Spanking set my children free on the path to a fulfilling life.
I need to close by saying that some children are easier than others and there is NO guarantee regarding how kids turn out. Kids are pretty tough both physically and emotionally and the key is to bend that young branch of the family tree without breaking it.
They and their parents will be worse.
Teachers are no longer allowed to discipline students. If they try to, they aren’t backed up by Admin.
It wasn’t this way when I first posted on FR. It’s that way now at least in the districts I teach/taught/live. Parents either don’t care or support the curriculum and classroom management policy.
Exactly.
It’s not the dems. The republicans are the same way with education.
George W Bush...No Child Left Behind per Ted Kennedy.
How many parents actually read/know the curriculum? Many would be shocked what’s being taught if they bothered to be informed. Or maybe they wouldn’t and agree with the curriculum. Maybe they agree with the classroom protocol now?
I’ve been posting on FR for over 12 years and I never thought I’d agree with the anti public education people...and now I do. If it happened in my white affluent area then it’s happening everywhere and our area was one of the last for it to happen in.The curriculum changed. The classroom management/policy changed. It’s chaos now.
I thought the same.
Have you perused the curriculum? Do you know what is being taught to your kids?
Yes, I was very involved too in my childrens’ k-8 catholic and 9-12 public school in our affluent area. I also teach in a neighboring affluent area/district.
All I can say is take a look at the entire curriculum which should be available online. Then take a look at the discipline policy (not called that now but you’ll know it when you read it).
I stopped teaching high school and middle school history when I couldn’t teach the curriculum. Still teaching math but it’s getting harder.
We are doing our children a huge disservice in their education. And parents are not parenting their kids. IMO
They act that way at our Catholic/Private school in our affluent area.
“No transgender ism. One boy dresses like a girl. No one cares.”
Ok then.
Thank you! (you never thought I’d say that, did you?).
Kids want, crave, a safe environment.
I could quote your whole post. Yes, yes and yes!
And now we are no longer giving it to them.
“They behave that way because they are looking for someone to be the adult in the room and put their foot down.”
Depends on the district and state. NJ has awesome benefits...thanks NJ taxpayers. Salary depends on the district. Many are awesome, some aren’t.
I now work in a district with awesome benefits (again, thanks NJ taxpayers including myself and family). But I’m now in a district where the pay sucks but I’m ok with that. LOL Unions also suck, especially teacher unions or any so called white collar unions. Just another arm of the democrat party.
