Why are people thirsty for 'raw water'?
BBC ^ | 21 June 2019 | Tim Smedley

Posted on 06/20/2019 8:18:39 PM PDT by DUMBGRUNT

a New York Times article mocking a new craze in San Francisco’s tech heartland for bottles of untreated spring water sold by companies such as Live Water for $36.99. These start-ups extolled the benefits of drinking “real water… within one lunar cycle of delivery”.

However, not everyone was laughing. Some were taking notes. Drinking water is typically highly regulated, and the market for buying and selling untreated water remains small and anecdotal. But the website Findaspring.com shows that “raw water” has since become a global movement of people seeking out their own wild water sources. Eager users list and map thousands of natural wells and springs across the world for people to drink from.

“It’s got probiotic bacteria in there… Drinking raw water improves microbiome health.” He’s also observed that “drinking raw water as your primary hydration for a few days yields noticeably smoother skin”.

There’s no telling what dead animal is floating in the water upstream from your patched lips...

Back when everyone used to drink raw water the leading cause of death was diarrhea.

That's not spring water, that's creek water. And you are right, it used to be risky, now it is nearly certain to be host to microbes you don't want to ingest.

Actual spring water is straight out of the ground, except perhaps for a few feet of pipe.

We drank from streams in the late 60s, just dipped our Sierra cups into the streams. The giardia problem did not begin in the Sierras until the late 70s.

https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/different-types-of-salt#pink-salt

Himalayan salt is mined in Pakistan.

It comes from the Khewra Salt Mine, the second largest salt mine in the world.

Himalayan salt often contains trace amounts of iron oxide (rust), which gives it a pink color.

It also has small amounts of calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium, making it slightly lower in sodium than regular table salt.

Many people prefer the flavor of Himalayan salt over other types.

However, the main difference is simply the color, which can make any dish visually appealing.

People are nuts.

Why are there 50 different kinds of salt in the grocery?

Most of it is silly hype. But there are a few specific types which make sense.

Table salt is for sprinkling on food and for use in cooking.

Coarse salt has appeal for serving different dishes. Instead of being evenly spread out like table salt, it gives little bursts of salt every once in a while.

Kosher salt is best for dry brining meat. Its flat flakes are more quickly dissolved and absorbed.

Rock salt is for making ice cream.

As for most of the rest, it's just marketing.

BTW, ALL salt is sea salt.

And I’ve been serving rusty salt to friends and family!

People are such morons.

How is this different from the private wells most of my neighbors have?

It's not.

My well is 8” casing 230’ deep. The pump is set at about 200’ deep. The water comes from an aquifer under the states of Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska. It test hard for minerals, comes out of the ground fairly cool, and tastes good. I drink it, wash in it, and soften it to wash clothes and my butt. I wouldn’t drink water from a crick without a purifying filter or boiling the heck out of it. Beaver fever is a hard row to hoe. If you get it by stock in a toilet paper company and lotion for your arse.

Treated water from your local water works has all the electrolytes in it as from it source. It does not have all the things in it that make you sick. This is idiocy.

What we here in the my location call the bacteria injested when drinking from mountain streams. If you ain’t where it’s bubbling out of the ground something above you may haved crapped or died just up stream.

But, everyone knows sliced lemons are totally full of germs!

Lemons that are sliced in a bar or restaurant at opening and then used hours later are going to be covered with bacteria.

I believe that is the point that was being made.

Slice your own at home (washed first) and use them right away and they are fine.
