Iran ‘executes former defence ministry employee on US spy charges’, according to reports

Iran’s IRIB news agency reported the man, who worked on contract for the aerospace organisation of the defence ministry, was executed at Rajai Shahr prison in Karaj, west of Tehran.

Jalal Hajizavar, who left his post nine years ago, was convicted by a military court after an investigation.

This discovered documents and spying equipment at his home, the report said.

The charges were on spying for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

There have not been further details on the when the execution took place.

The news comes amid growing tensions between Iran and the United States.

President Donald Trump said on Saturday he will impose additional sanctions against Iran in an effort to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

“We are putting additional sanctions on Iran,” President Trump said. “In some cases we are going slowly, but in other cases we are moving rapidly.”
