Megadeth Frontman Dave Mustaine Diagnosed With Throat Cancer

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine on Monday announced that he has been diagnosed with throat cancer. As a result, most of his band's shows for this year will be canceled. He did say, however, that the Megacruise — slated for Oct. 13-18 — will still happen.

"I’ve been diagnosed with throat cancer. It’s clearly something to be respected and faced head on - but I’ve faced obstacles before. I’m working closely with my doctors, and we’ve mapped out a treatment plan which they feel has a 90 percent success rate. Treatment has already begun," Mustaine, 57, shared with fans. "Unfortunately, this requires that we cancel most shows this year. The 2019 Megacruise will happen, and the band will be a part of it in some form. All up to date information will be at megadeth.com as we get it. Megadeth will be back on the road ASAP.

Dave is pretty much conservative on many political issues. Hopefully he can recover fully.

“In My Darkest Hour” helped me get through a tough time in my life. Not singularly. Strength, faith and family, too. But a song can have reaching powers in its own way.

I went to Big Four at Yankee Stadium. I have never been a Megadeath fan (nor Slayer for that matter) but he put on a respectable show. Later I found out that Mustaine risked paralysis and death in doing the gig.

I'm still not a Megadeath fan, but I have WAYYY more respect for him than anyone in Metallica (except James) and Slayer. He can beat this. You're in the DoodleBob family prayers, Dave.

I can’t get past the Christ hate from Slayer. I like metal, but miss me with that band.

90% is pretty good as throat cancer typically has a 50% chance for 5 year survival rate. My sister died of it.

I thought throat cancer had a higher survival rate? (provided it hasn’t metastasized?)

Prayers up for Dave.
Chuck Billy from Testament got ball cancer in his chest and survived.

I watched a documentary on the history of heavy metal where Slayer's lead vocalist Tom Araya was interviewed. He's Catholic and he said that most of the band's persona was an image meant to scare people. In reality none of them are Satan worshipers and when he was asked if he thinks God Hates Us All he said no, it's just a cool sounding title. God doesn't hate us all.

The also write some songs that are religious in nature. Born of Fire, for instance sounds like it's a Devil worshiping song but the lyric Lost are those who trust a liar, Satan's son I'm born of fire suggest just the opposite.

I know Tom Araya is a Catholic, but he may have to answer one day for leading people astray who take their message seriously.

Damn.. I've been a Megadeth fan from the git-go. Jazz-metal. Hehehe.
Last I saw them was in Raleigh a few years ago with 'Maiden. Great show!

I hate that for Mr Dave and hope for a good outcome. Homer's had a helluva ride either way, tho'. d;^)

In this interview he says he is a Christian now, and they prayed before each concert.

It depends on what he means by "throat" cancer. If it's a head and neck cancer that's in his oropharynx area, there's a better chance of outcome than if it were in his esophagus.

At his age, he is also in a prime range for head & neck cancer from an HPV infection. The prognosis for this type of cancer is also 90% or better for a recovery.

If radiation is used, there's a chance his ability to sing could be affected for more than a year. Radiation is harsh, to this area of the body.
