A man drowned Saturday evening after his 3-year-old child reportedly fell from a bridge into the water in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

According to the Becker County Sheriff's Office, at about 8:22 p.m., officials received a report of a possible drowning at Long Bridge at Dead Shot Bay.

When they arrived, they were told a 3-year-old child fell from the bridge into the water.

The child's father then jumped into the water to help.

Authorities say the father began to struggle while keeping the child above water.

Bystanders went into the water and brought the child to shore, but the man never resurfaced.

Officials searched for the man and eventually located him at 9:07 p.m.

He was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Friends and family says dad who drowned saving his boy is a hero

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (Valley News Live)

The Becker County Sheriff identified Christopher Schultz as the man who tragically died rescuing his son.

The 31-year-old is from Frazee but has deep connections in the Detroit Lakes area.

“Without a hesitation jumping in - that’s heroic, to me that’s an honorable death,” Matthew Clark said.

Clark said he met Schultz 10 years ago and describes him as a person who made a positive impact.

“Guy just sacrificed his life to make sure his kid could see another day.

He wasn’t thinking about anything else other than that,” Clark said.

Messages poured over social media describing Schultz as a dedicated father of four. ...”

Water temperatures in the low 60s. Without a wet suit, even a strong swimmer can be incapacitated in less than 45 minutes.

Add a little panic, the shock from jumping in unexpectedly, and the energy expended to keep his 3 year-old son’s head above water, it may have been under 30 minutes.

Clearly the Dad saved his son’s life. As tragic as this is, the son will never have to wonder if his Dad loved him.

Why hang out on a bridge with your 3 year old? Tragic for all.

Dads are often unable to see how dangerous a situation is for little children. It’s always amazed me. My first thought was the same as yours. He took that kid to a dangerous place and lost his life because of it. Sad on father’s day.

This is the highest, most noble thing a man can do, to give his life for another.

Tragic. I’ve been to this area. My folks have a cabin on Pelican Lake. My other relatives have property on Melissa.

The weight and encumbrance of fully soaked clothing and footwear might well have reduced that time considerably...

(I have some personal (scary) experience with that from my teen years, and I am (or at least was, then) a GOOD swimmer.)

Prayers for all...

True. But once old enough, the poor kid is going to feel guilty for the rest of his life.

Thus is profoundly sad, and I hope and pray that God brings comfort to this family.
