Weekly Garden Thread - June 8-14, 2019
June 8, 2019 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 06/08/2019 5:50:16 AM PDT by Diana in Wisconsin

Our 'Greeneyes' has been FOUND, but she is STILL having computer issues, so I have been asked to keep the Weekly Garden Thread rolling until she returns.

That said, I will be posting once a week, and I will TRY to stick to her schedule of a Friday Night/Saturday Morning Weekly Post, but it depends upon what is going on here at MY farm. (It's Spring; it's BUSY!)

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

It gets plenty cold here to provide the winter freeze needed by cherries. That’s not the problem. I think it’s the soil. Wild cherries do fine. Pie cherries just die.

Stark Bros. Nursery is 50 miles or so from here. I bet they have cherry trees that will live here.

Huh. I’m stumped, then.

I made the mistake of planting a Montmorency Cherry back when cherry juice was going to cure whatever ailed us.

That thing grew to 20’ tall, and I was never able to pick the darn thing because the bottom branches were a good 12’ off the ground...and I’m 5-foot NOTHING, LOL!

Now, I only plant Dwarf varieties of fruit trees. ;)

Thank you. I might go scorched earth and do it all.

That’s why I hate store stuff because I’ve grown my own.

I’m spoiled.

Yeah, well, with 365 days a year of nearly PERFECT growing season, you should! :)

I lived in Imperial Beach from 1980-’82. I couldn’t believe that people needed coats, hats and gloves when it went down to 50 degrees, LOL!

That’s, ‘Shorts & Flip-Flops Weather’ in Wisconsin!

I LOVE having Four Seasons, though. I NEED time to regroup in the Winter months after running myself ragged Spring through Fall. ;)

You know how squash sometimes wilts in hot weather and springs back later?

It was triple digits today and not one of them wilted!

I sure am glad to have those soaker hoses.

So far they seem to be working pretty well.

I still have to water a few things by hand but it’s been nice to let it drip while I go get other things done.

If we owned our home I would install a sprinkler system out front. Most of the time we are under drought conditions so I quit trying to have a lawn out front. Also, crime is rising in our neighborhood so I don’t like to be outside in the front yard. I’d rather save the water to grow a few veggies instead.

A house on a few acres with solar, a well, septic and gray water irrigation would be nice.

“A house on a few acres with solar, a well, septic and gray water irrigation would be nice.”

It took me until I was 35 to buy my first hobby farm, but it was SO worth it! I spent summers with my Aunt on her farm as an indentured servant, and between her and my Grandma, I learned a lot and caught the bug early in life.

Sometimes I’m overwhelmed going from 1.2 acres (which held a LOT!) to 160 acres. Luckily, I’m only ‘in charge’ of the house yard and the kitchen garden, the house, all the dogs, the cats, and the mule. And feeding Beau 3x a day, 365. But it’s a nice gig. ;)

The states where you’re looking to move should have something to offer you in terms of more open spaces; keep the dream alive! :)

Some trees do poorly and die if they can’t establish a relationship with the fungi and other life in the soil. Maybe a bit of mycorrhizal innoculant would help?

Planting has finally started! I’m at least a month behind, but the tilling is finally done, and I’m poking seeds in the ground between rainstorms.

One of the local turtles started planting ahead of me. I was out tilling and spotted her laying eggs in the corner of my field. I marked out the area so they aren’t disturbed. I’m actually rather impressed that she walked so far, my field is at the top of a very steep hill, quite a ways from the river!

My original plan was to camp on my farm so I could get more work done. Heat sickness plus problems with my campsite have put a dent in that plan. I’ll try again after planting is done, but for now I’m working at night and sleeping during the day. I get more done in the cooler temperatures.

I’ve kind of been banning myself from the computer except when it rains, so I probably won’t be around much, even when I’m not camping. Then again, as often as it’s been raining, I might be around enough no one will notice!

I know where to find you, and I can always CALL YOUR MOM, LOL!

I wish the weather was better for you this season but you’re making great progress. My tomatoes and peppers are just SITTING THERE, but salad greens are growing like there’s no tomorrow. They are loving this cool, wet spring so far.

I don’t even want to THINK about what Summer may bring us...if She ever arrives. Probably straight to Hot & Dry. I guess we’ll know in 9 short days! ;)

Other trees from the same nursery are thriving. Peach, apple, pear, plum, and nectarine.

It's baffling.

Aha. Thanks. It’s been too wet to plant here since Mother’s Day, but I’ll get some maters and peppers in the ground this weekend. Your garden is, as always, amazing. Maybe next year I’ll retire and do some catching up.

Everything is growing nicely in my gardening pots here in Southeast Virginia. Tomato plants getting nice and tall, with evidence of flower buds. Cucumber plants growing nicely and also evidence of flower buds. Coleus, caladiums, and impatence growing nicely. Some coleus plants have flower stalks. Hope all is well with everybody.
