Marijuana, Mental Illness, and Violence
Imprimis ^ | Jan 2019 | Alex Berenson

Most of all, advocates have told you that marijuana is not just safe for people with psychiatric problems like depression, but that it is a potential treatment for those patients. On its website, the cannabis delivery service Eaze offers the “Best Marijuana Strains and Products for Treating Anxiety.” “How Does Cannabis Help Depression?” is the topic of an article on Leafly, the largest cannabis website. But a mountain of peer-reviewed research in top medical journals shows that marijuana can cause or worsen severe mental illness, especially psychosis, the medical term for a break from reality. Teenagers who smoke marijuana regularly are about three times as likely to develop schizophrenia, the most devastating psychotic disorder.

Next they can go find that part of the Constutution that authorizes the federal gov to put people in jail for possession and ingestion of a plant. I will give you a hint, it’s in the 11th amendment

I don’t know about schizophrenia, but it does induce psychosis and psychotic episodes in some users. I’ve known people with no history of mental illness who’ve become delusional and suffer paranoid fantasies as a result of their pot usage. Almost invariably, when one hears about some wacko who’s become convinced that people are beaming radio waves into his head and things like that, it turns out the guy is on THC.

So-called “reefer madness” is real, in that an extraordinary number of perpetrators seemingly random acts of violence are users of the drug. The guys who killed Chris Kyle is an example. Another is the guy who shot a cop in Davis, CA, a few months back when he was convinced that the police were aiming “ultrasonic waves” at him. When that story first broke, I suggested here on FR that his fantasies were indicative of pot use. Some weed fans here laughed it off and said that I was pulling that out of my ass. When the tox report came out a few weeks later, it of course did show that the perp was a THC guy.

Instead of knee jerking the “reefer madness”’canard read the article. It is well documented and not hysterical. If you have an argument against it address it specifically.

I believe this article is quite fair and well documented with a variety of sources.

The same reason we can forbid drunk driving.

Someone driving drunk isn’t hurting anyone. It’s the fact that we know that he is endangering others that makes him guilty.

A strict libertarian would say don’t arrest him until he damages property or harms or kills somebody.

But I am not a strict libertarian. And I believe it is lawful for states at least to enact laws to prevent endangerment. Unfenced pools. Drunk and high people. Menacing animals. Etc.

All you weenie moron losers who know nothing and still spout guvmint crap from the 20s like reefer madness Which was blatantly racist Should just take your know nothing nonsense and get lost

The game is over. Cannibis is ancient medicine and CBD is helping millions of people with no serious psychoactive effects.

The teas. Chocolate. And other edibles help millions with nausea caused by cancer anxiety. Bulemia and hundreds of other conditions

Smoking anything is stupid. But kids will be kids and hippies hippies

Cannibis has been around for thousands of years and ain’t going away

You doubters and naysayers. Are

Yes, but it is more than that:

The roads are not the drunk or drugged driver’s private property; they are public roads funded by all taxpayers.

Those taxpayers are entitled to reasonable safety precautions, especially since driving is a privilege, not a right.

I am an herbalist with 26 years’ experience. CBD is not THC; the marijuana cultivar is not natural hemp (Cannabis sativa).

Your argument, so called, relies on conflating separate factors and on ad hominem fallacy.

I have advocated for the legality of natural hemp since 1993. It is one of the most valuable plants in human history - for fiber and for food. Ot has an extraordinarily beneficial fatty acid profile, and a uniquely high-quality protein that is mainly globulin in nature.

I oppose smoking anything, including the artificial cultivar, marijuana.

Instead of accusing others of ignorance, get educated and cultivate (pun intended) respect, troll.

This article, if you’d read it, does not argue against any medicinal uses.

All Medicinal drugs have a cost as well as a benefit. In some cases the benefit of marijuana may cancel out the cost.

But the costs are too high for recreational use and that is what is being discussed.

I like the law enforcement/criminal justice option. That’s a real cost saver.

Yes I agree about the roads.

I also agree about attractive nuisance laws. We don’t wait until a toddler hops into a pool to require fencing.

I also agree that a drugged/drunk individual should not be allowed to care for a minor or vulnerable adult even in private property. I don’t want to wait until the abuse or neglect occurs.

Etc.

we are NOT going to stop the legalization of recreational drugs......

there is no going back.....

people wanted this....

just like they wanted pornography, and prostitution, and homosexual marriage, and boys and men competing in girls and womens sports....

there is no going back....

there is only finding some sane area to live where people practice common sense and worship the Lord.....

"Concerned? Sure - as for MVAs involving alcohol. But if pot MVAs justify a ban, so do alcohol MVAs justify a ban on alcohol.

just once would you pot advocates admit that free flowing weed is a horrible idea and sure, its all fine and good when a tiny number or people use it, but wait till it is endemic in our youth, our police, our military, or DOCTORS.....

and perhaps the biggest danger with weed as opposed to alcohol is that everyone can tell when someone is plastered, and they can avoid being in the car with them....not so much with pot heads.....its insidious......
