The cold case murders of a Wisconsin couple on a camping trip 43 years ago has led to the arrest through DNA of an 82-year-old helpful handyman, according to a report.
Raymond Vannieuwenhoven has been jailed in lieu of bond after being charged with fatally shooting David Schuldes, 25, and Ellen Matheys, 24, in a park 80 miles north of Green Bay on July 9, 1976.
He has also been charged with raping Matheys.
The arrest in March shocked his neighbors in the tiny town of Lakewood, the Associated Press reported Saturday.
I said, You gotta be kidding me, Wayne Sankey recalled.
And then I told the wife and she couldnt believe it. Theres no way, she said. Ray down the road?
They said they knew he had been a nasty drunk but that was about all they knew. ..."
I know this much when he was drinking he was one son of a b----.
You didnt want to be anywhere near him when he was drinking.
Not just me, a lot of people, said Fred Mason, 66, a worker at the town dump where Vannieuwenhoven would rummage through scrap piles for small engine parts.

People were shocked that a crazy evil drunk was the killer?
Back in 1957, at age 20, this guy attacked two teenage girls in one day:
Hard to believe he attacked no one between 1957 and 1976 or that he never attacked anyone again.
So, the question is, how many other unknown victims did he have?
I guess they were shocked that he was THAT friggin evil and crazy.
DNA Bump.
DNA genealogists thought it was someone in his family, police started getting samples using various means:
“The next subject was Raymand Vannieuwenhoven, who lived in the Town of Lakewood. A deputy approached him and asked him to take a survey. The deputy asked Raymand to seal the envelope.
On March 7, saliva from the envelope was sent to the Wisconsin State Crime Lab. The complaint states that it was found to be the single source male DNA profile developed from semen found on Ellen Matheys’ shorts.”
I used to go camping a lot in the ‘80s with the then-love of my life. Both of us really loved and enjoyed it.
Funny, in a sense, that during the long dark overnights in the secluded woods we would often hear strange sounds, like something moving around. Almost certainly it was animals or maybe twigs falling from trees. But then who the heck knew for sure what it was. Could have been some nut job roaming around. Maybe I just watched too many horror flicks growing up.
DNA evidence collected from Matheys body had been preserved until March 2018, when investigators worked with a laboratory to develop a profile and even a sketch of her killer.
Had been preserved until March 2018???? They better still have it otherwise the evidence could be from the envelop used to trick him. If the chain of custody is not precise, the case is garbage. They are probably relying on date sent to lab, but lets face it, there are a lot of corrupt prosecutors out there.
Raymond Vannieuwenhoven...5th grade nickname...alphabet.
From another source...
“Do you understand that you’re facing two potential life sentences plus an additional 15 years?
So this is a matter that is extraordinarily serious for you,” Judge Morrison told Vannieuwenhoven.
Evidence from the sexual assault was submitted and a DNA profile was established.
Investigators developed persons of interest and obtained DNA samples.
Years went by without a hit in the DNA database.
The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office started working with the company Parabon Nanolabs on DNA analysis.
A criminal complaint obtained by Action 2 News details how they narrowed down their list to focus on Vannieuwenhoven.
On Oct. 9, 2018, investigators were contacted by Parabon that a genealogist who looked at the case and come up with a possible suspect.
The genealogist was able to narrow down a suspect pool to a family with ties to the Green Bay area.
The genealogist identified the Vannieuwenhovens, believing it could be one of four sons or four grandsons in the family.
In January, investigators did surveillance on one of the Vannieuwenhoven sons and obtained a garbage bag from his home.
Socks, a bandage and an inhaler were set to the crime lab for testing. It was confirmed that he wasn’t their suspect.
They moved on to another brother.
A detective had coffee with a second Vannieuwenhoven brother and took the man’s cup for DNA analysis. He was not the match.
The next subject was Raymand Vannieuwenhoven, who lived in the Town of Lakewood.
A deputy approached him and asked him to take a survey. The deputy asked Raymand to seal the envelope.
On March 7, saliva from the envelope was sent to the Wisconsin State Crime Lab.
The complaint states that it was found to be the single source male DNA profile developed from semen found on Ellen Matheys’ shorts.
A search warrant was executed at Raymand’s home on March 14 and he was taken into custody.
“Genetic genealogy is highly accurate. However, no arrests are made based on our work.
Its really highly scientific tips that we provide to investigators — its a lead generation — and then they have to take the information that is provided through genetic genealogy analysis and build their traditional forensic case,” Parabon Nanolabs chief genetic genealogist CeCe Moore told Action 2 News in a phone interview Friday. ...”
Sorry, don’t know what you’re getting at.
These people sound incredibly stupid
arrogant sob....wonder if he’ll enter court in a wheelchair...
I will never go to ancestry or any of those DNA home kits to find out about my ancestry.
Who knows maybe it will pop up in some police investigation an incorrectly point to me as a killer then I have to prove that I’m not.
And if I get moeller I’ll have to prove that I didn’t kill anyone and that I’m not guilty but of course they can’t prove I’m Not Innocent either
Probably Belgian (or Dutch): name from "Nieuwenhoven Castle" in Belgium.
"Nieu", as in the Dutch spelling of New York. "Wenhoven", probably named regarding a town his ancestors came from. Possibly even a town that had disappeared during The Plague of the Middle Ages.
