Your diet may have more impact on your cancer risk than you might think, a new study has found.
An estimated 80,110 new cancer cases among adults 20 and older in the United States in 2015 were attributable simply to eating a poor diet, according to the study, published in the JNCI Cancer Spectrum on Wednesday.
"This is equivalent to about 5.2% of all invasive cancer cases newly diagnosed among US adults in 2015," said Dr. Fang Fang Zhang, a nutrition and cancer epidemiologist at Tufts University in Boston, who was first author of the study.
"This proportion is comparable to the proportion of cancer burden attributable to alcohol," she said.
The researchers evaluated seven dietary factors: a low intake of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and dairy products and a high intake of processed meats, red meats and sugary beverages, such as soda.
"Low whole-grain consumption was associated with the largest cancer burden in the US, followed by low dairy intake, high processed-meat intake, low vegetable and fruit intake, high red-meat intake and high intake of sugar-sweetened beverages," Zhang said.

Yes, processed carbs have no place in a healthy diet. At best they should be a tiny portion of the diet when you are forced to eat away from home.
They didn’t say low grain, they said low whole grain. Whole grain is high fiber, and fiber is pretty useful for scrubbing crud out of the colon so the stuff doesn’t rot in there producing toxins. It is not the only source of fiber, of course.
I love my whole milk but that’s about it for dairy.
Not exactly truth. Partial truth. Sugar , ie glucose, feeds all cells. . Cells require glucose. Cancer cells are cells. Hence, sugar feeds cancer is hyperbole.
Only eating and exclusively whole food, plant-based diet can shield you from, and in some cases reverse cancer.
Our bodies are built to pass products out of them perfectly. The ideology that things ferment and rot in our colons is hogwash.
And, if something is going to ferment, it will be ... fiber (carbs).
.LOL! I hope youre trolling. Seriously. This has to be the most dangerous advice Ive ever seen. What you just said is the complete opposite of the truth. I recommend you pick up the book The Starch Solution, by Dr McDougal for starters. Then, Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis, and How Not To Die by Dr Michael Gregor.
Humans are meant to live on whole grain carbohydrates. Most of your calories should come from starch. Along with fruits and vegetables. All meat , poultry, pork, fish and dairy are carcinogens and not safe for human consumption in any amount.
Some cancer cells are known to need more glucose, consume more glucose, therefore, cutting down on glucose can reverse cancer. Starve it.
I’ve been KETO since beginning of Feb. Lost 40 pounds, feel great.
There is amazing research out there on the benefits of very low carb / high fat diets.
My problem now is how to stay on KETO and stop losing weight.
I do three hours of aerobics a week and swim 6 miles a week.
To quote my internist (who is a very smart chap): Theres a lot we dont know about medicine
I recommend you look at the works by (just to get you started):
Dr. Jason Fung
Dr. Annette Bosworth
Dr. Peter Attia
Dr. David Unwin
Dr. David Ludwig
Type 2 diabetes is being reversed with keto diets.
You can directly tie the skyrocketing chronic diseases in the US with the recommendation of increasing carb based diets (Standard American Diet).
I don’t even listen to what these researchers are saying because it seems that what is good for you today will be bad for you in ten years and vice versa.
A lot of these studies are being used to keep these research labs operating, whether they produce anything of value.
A whole foods, plant-based diet, high in whole-grain carbs, fruits, vegetables, beans, and nuts, does not come close to resembling the standard American diet. The standard American diet that is killing people is high-protein, high fat. Heavy in meat, poultry, pork, fish, dairy. Its killing people with heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and every other chronic disease.
I have been plant-based, whole foods, low protein, low-fat, for over 10 years. Literally the best thing Ive ever done for myself. Never felt better. Blood work numbers are perfect for an almost 50 yr old man. . I have the energy to work out and build muscle.
You could also add Forks over Knives to your reading list. .Youll find it very eye-opening.
I have been doing “keto” off and on for almost 2 years now, but became very committed in March of this year (no more cheat weekends, >30 pounds lost since first of March). There is more support for it now than when I started a few years ago, more food recommendations, apps, etc.
What got me finally hooked. Sleep and relief from chronic pain (degenerative disc disease, plantar fasciitis, my knee from a torn cartilage).
I sleep like I did in my 20s. For over 20 years, I have not been able to sleep in a bed for more than 4 or so hours... having to move to my recliner. Pain wakes me up. Now, I can stay in bed for 8 hours, rarely do I have any pain, and it is even more rare for me to have to get up because of pain.
I used to not be able to walk for long without my feet swelling from plantar fasciitis. My knee would swell up like a ball if I stood for any amount of time.
At the first of May, I took a nearly 6 mile hike. No swelling in my feet or knee. And... 6 mile hike with degenerative disc disease. It would have taken me weeks to recover before.
But, I was able to go for another hike the next weekend!
Atkins diet (keto) works without external carbs.
I have read the heart and brain prefer ketone bodies.
And cancer cells cannot make do without glucose.
More recently the US government has come up with "my plate". But again, carbs constitute nearly 75% of the guidance:
Newborn babies are in... ready for this: ketosis.
Babies that are breastfed are in ... ready for this... ketosis.
I had been doing everything right, all of the misinformation you are spreading on here, and had massive chronic health conditions.
I am now on the keto train and have never felt better. The chronic conditions are reversing.
I don’t have 10 years of ketosis under my belt, but I had nearly 50 years of the “correct” way and I would not have made it another 10 years.
There are a lot of longterm keto people out there. When your body hits its optimal weight, you will stabilize, :-).
This may be good advice but it is not solid research.
My wife was the head RN in a busy family practice. She and her doctors based on observations only with no hard science.
They noticed that their patients, who ate basically the Mediterranean diet, walked and lived a life of balance often had long, good and healthy lifespans into their 60/70/80’s plus.
About 5 years ago, we started on basically the Med diet. My wife’s annual blood tests in a couple of years improved. Her doctor’s comments on her last tests, “Your values are better than most of my 20-30 year old patients, who spend hours each week at a gym.”
My tests this past month are the best that I have had in decades. At 80 plus, my lipid tests are in normal range and my bone density tests were excellent. I don’t need any calcium, vitamin D or any supplement.
Well, will what works for my wife and I work for others!
No and maybe.
The problem is the diet nazis might try to force this diet on the 95% of the people that it might not work on. It could be another anti fat fad to go with the statin fad. It might work for a small % and be a complete PIA and failure for most patients.
The pro veggie diet pushers are becoming pia force.
Trust no small study that might work for a small group of people.
